^...in what way does going to a CC hurt your future.
what reasons did your friends say that it hurts you in any way?
or did they just flat out say its bad?

i go to pasadena city college and pcc students do as well or even excel UCLA students in their first 2 years of college

a huge portion of californians go to CC's

i didn't take my sats either, or i coulda went to a CSU but whatever i'm kind of over going to a nice school

any suggestions?
go to a CC and if you seriously seriously have no financial aid or money in any way
you'll have to work in the summer to save up some money, and that'll go to your tuition, books, bus/parking permit. and just work part time

my friends keep on telling me how bad community college will hurt my future.. but everyone here says its such a good thing.

i really don't think i'll get accepted into a good UC (preferably UCI-dream school but kinda low standard haha) because.. this is my situation.

1. as a junior in high school, i haven't met a good GPA avg. during freshman and sophomore year i slacked a LOT and kinda rebelled against my parents. this year my gpa is WAY better but it won't be convincing with my record from freshman and sophomore year.
2. i haven't taken the s.a.t yet because you don't need to get s.a.t for community college but now my friends are telling me to go straight to UC first.. plus i'm not sure i'll do good on it. i've never really spent the time to study for it for the past 10 years of my life like all my friends have.

and even if i did good on s.a.t and made it into university...
3. i have no scholarship.
4. i have no money.
5. i don't believe in loans.
6. plus my parents are in debt.
7. loans caused this countries (U.S) recession.

any suggestions? s:

how is CCs bad for your future?? did they give u any rational reasons? CCs is where you do your GEDs, NOT your major. you're basically saving money when youre doing your geds at ccs. its so expensive at ucs. ccs have smaller classes so you can get to know your professors well rather than having 200-300+ students in lecture class with one professor. yes u will be missing out on the dorming experience, parties, blah blah. but you`ll get over it sleep.gif really ccs arent bad for your future. i LOVEE my college right now. everyone works so hard and if you have a financial problem then cc is the way to go! $20 per unit cmon! i use to think that ccs were bad too cus in my opinion, only students who didnt try hard enough and those who slacked off went to ccs cus they didnt have a high gpa and stuff. i was totally proved wrong. yes, there are ppl who slacked off and didnt give a crap and there still are a lot of those people, but also, there are soooo many freaking smart people in my classes its just woahh. i love the fact that ppl were given a second chance to do well in the future and thats its closer to home. i think i would have died without my moms cooking lol. so if you have a financial problem, go to a cc, do well on your geds, and transfer to an ivy league or something lol. my friend has a low income but had a good gpa got into columbia with a full ride. ivy leagues such as harvard and yale and stuff are letting low income students study for free now which is why there was such an increase in this years admissions. half of them were low income people. this is america so theres always a way to getting a good education!

woahhh, i wrote a long post lol hope this helped ^^

Going to a CC first does NOT hurt you in the future, you get the same diploma in the end, which is what all that matters. Not to mention you save SO MUCH money.

The only thing that I could see as being as negative is that you loose the first two years of "on-campus" life, but eh no biggie, I mean if you live in Cali I bet many of your friends have gone to UCs/Calstates near by, not to mention those in CC's as well.

About the financial aid, you will be able to apply for FASFA which is generally money given to you for your education if your parents and yourself are unable to pay for school. Loans are not necessarily bad.. if you pay as you go. Cause honestly if you have a normal job $8.25(or w/e minimum wage is)-$11.00 and go to school and pay for other things it will be nearly impossible to save up for an ~13,000 a year school cost.

Many of my friends have actually told me they wished that they went to CC for two years first rather than going directly to UC/CSU.

Got to love california <3

oh yea about finishing your IGETC, my advice is: don't overwhelm yourself, know what classes you need to take to fulfill IGETC/major pre-reqs(not classes your friend is taking), talk to councilors if one doesn't do a good job talk to another, never get discouraged, never give up, GO TO CLASS!!, and as mentioned assist.org made just for CC transfers wink.gif lame I know

does anyone go to SMC? i dont know how im gona finish all the units for IGETC.. theres so much to dooo.

well as long you have 60 units of transfer units and finish most of the prereq u should be set to go. some major are not recommedned to use the IGETC pattern esp like high unit major like biology, nursing, etc

Well I applied to UCSD, UCI, Berkeley and UCLA
and I got into UCSD and UCI...but I want to go to UCLA, waiting til the end of april is nerve wrecking!

what were ur stats if you dont' mind me asking?...i want to go to UCLA, but with my GPA i doubt it and i didn't finished my prereqs for UCLA, and they are very strict about it.

that's good that u hear back from two schools. I only hear from one, i should be worried.

ellen! smile.gif i don't go to SMC but i go to Berkeley City College :T
i'm trying to finish up my igetc up until fall semester 08' and then do my pre-reqs for my major in the spring semester.
what are you majoring in? IGETC shouldn't take too long to finish but depending on your major esp. like biochem or something science-related it might take longer since there are more pre-reqs to complete. you're trying to transfer out in the Fall of 09' right?

Btw, is anyone eligible for FAFSA? i wanted to try it out but my sister said she was rejected for financial aid because our mom was making sufficient money. I still want to apply for FAFSA though.

My advice for people going to community college first is make sure you know what courses you need to take and take them. Don't take classes you don't need and waste your time. IGETC is the goal unless you're a science major, than you need to have your majors classes done.

I think you need to do fafsa to apply for loans? I was eligible for fafsa though.

I have a few friends that go to CSU East Bay. One of them personally doesn't like it there but the other one is pretty content there. I guess it all just depends on the person. I also think it's relatively newer than other CSU's (correct me if I'm wrong). I applied there for the nursing program but I don't get results until the end of May... x] Btw, East Bay is one of the schools on a QUARTER and not semester system.

I don't think it's bad to go to a CC first. You'll save tons of money. & it's especially helpful if you're not sure what your major is yet, that way, you can just focus on getting your general ed done. I also think it's easier to transfer from a CC; besides California CC students have priority in transferring from what I know, and there are some programs where you can get a guaranteed transfer thing, you probably have to talk to your counselor about it. I know people who got rejected from UC's when they graduated from high school, but when they transferred they got in easier. And I also didn't do that great in high school. Thankfully I brought my GPA up these past two years so when you transfer they're going to look at that transcript. Hope this helped.

actually for most majors, it is essential that you complete the IGETC and get it's certification as IGETC certification = saying that you completed your General Education. so taking a bunch of transfer units focused on a couple fields is not recommended and IGETC is a good guideline. You can't go wrong with it.

reply to someone up top saying that their friends said going to a CC will hurt your future... how would they know?
take it from people that have experienced it.

in my opinion, CC is actually better for your future as you wont be in debt when you graduate after transfer while your friends are working to pay off their 4 year loans (generally). employers look at where you graduated and your degree, not necessarily the road you took to get there.

im at ccsf now too but i already applied and been accepted at some uc's for tranfer ^^ for fall 08.

to tranfer fall 09 u should file from november 1-30, 2008 which is during the fall 08 semester. (this is assuming u want uc, since u mentioned a personal statement) u turn in ur personal statement along with the application. in fact when u apply online, they have space toward the end of the application in which u just copy and paste ur essay rite into there and u submit the whole form online.

first, you would have to see if your cc allows someone to apply & enroll without a high school diploma or a equivalent. you would also have to take a assessment test to see which level of math and english you are suited for.

if you already know you are going to end up going to a CC and want to get a head start, why not try the GED and then go to college full time? it's one possibility.

id be grateful if anyone can answer my question.

i currently go to SMC and i want to transfer to UCLA and second choice would be UCB.. in two years.
anyway, my major is THEATRE ART and UCLA and UCB don't require specific prerequisites but UCI, UCSD, UCSB, CSULB all require different prerequisites. so to be safe (in case i dont get into UCLA, UCB), i would have to take ALL of those classes.. correct? because that would be impossible for me.. (the classes are only like .5 units so they wouldn't help to fill up 60 units)....what do i do???

state is pretty much the same as uc's
except they follow the GE BREADTH requirements which is identical to the IGETC with a lil differences.
Most noticeable difference with GE BREADTH is that u have to take 1 speech class.
if u want to transfer to a State school, look into GE BREADTH certification.

if u really want to take the cc road already while at hs, as long you have counselor approval (if ur under 18) or 18 or older you can take college courses. for business major, use the assist.org to let u know what prereqs to take for your major, accordingly to waht college you would want to transfer to.

you should try to finish as many prereq as possible, you can always take other transferable courses to get 60 units
