Does anybody know any community colleges in California offering any of the following languages as a major --
Chinese, Japanese or Arabic?I currently live in Illinois, but I might be going to community college. Bad thing is that NO school (at least to my knowledge), community or not, offers Chinese, Japanese and Arabic as majors.
I think the desparate (and only

) thing to do would be to move out to California and room w/someone in a community college for 2-ish years and then transfer to a California university that offers these majors (I know that UCLA has all three

)....
But for language majors,
is it possible to not major in it during community college (e.g. the community college near my house) and
then declare your major there in university when you transfer? Don't you need a certain amount of credit hours in that specified language for transfer anyway? .........

I hate Illinois. No special language majors except the usual.
ALSO -- what is the likelihood of being accepted for transfer to a U of C school from an out-of-state community college? I know for in-state community colleges, w/an associate degree in whatever major, it's somewhere like 98% chance you'll be accepted. But what about for out-of-state community college transfers?
Wow, I share the same interest as you! Only I live in Virginia. I so really want to go to a UC (specifically San Diego)! But first off I have to go live in California. I am debating whether or not to transfer into UCSD or take a year off and go into UCSD as a freshman (which would be the best situation

).
ANYWAY... I am also looking toward a Chinese AND Japanese major (I like both languages and want to be fluent in both). There are two California Community Colleges that I know of that offer both of these languages and are GOOD colleges to go to. Maybe if you find more or find more information, we can add them to our list,
you know helping each other out
.
Foothill College located really near San Fransisco.
Santa Monica College located really near Los Angeles.

As for out-of-state community college, I DOUBT you would want to do this. First of all,
out-of-state tuition would be an extra $20,000 a year! It would be cheaper to move to California and take a community college there (even though there is community college out-of-state tuition rates, it is not bad as $20,000 a year). Also, California community colleges have specialized programs that are
geared toward getting into a California 4-year university. You want this for the best chance.
Although I was not direct in answering whether or not the UC's accept out-of-state community colleges, it should be clear that the best thing to do is go to a California community college.
