Hey guys! thanks for all the advice but I got a question. I graduated class of 09'
I will be going to a CC and I went to take the placement test yesterday.. I got a really low score, so I'm pretty sure they are going to give me really crappy classes.. Like Elementary Algebra, English Essentials, and Basic Reading. I don't really want those classes..is there a way for me to get the classes that I want?

PM me if you can! or reply here thank you so much!

well at my community college, you can retake the placement exam. check with your college.

i haven't transferred yet, but I have finished my first year. As for how hard the classes are, it really depends from school to school and from professor to professor. Some classes are SUPER EASY. Some are RIDICULOUSLY HARD. Some are in the middle. It really just depends on each case scenario. Your strengths/weaknesses and whatnot may also play a factor.

For example, I just took Statistics and General Chemistry II, I finished with a 98% and 95% respectively. In Physics II, however, I was struggling like no other. I had maybe a 75% before I decided to drop the class. Btw, there were UC Berkeley kids in my Physics class thinking it'd be easier taking physics at a CC but were struggling as well. Also, I took two years worth of Physics in high school. Didn't help at all for this CC class. Also, I found that I had to work much harder in General Chemistry I than General Chemistry II to achieve the same letter grade.

Um yeah. I hope that helps? haha. tongue.gif

The level of difficulty really depends on the teacher. Like Universities some classes will be extremely difficult and others will be extremely easy. The biggest difference in the coursework is typically how your grade is weighted. In CCs I find that you get graded on things such as tests, quizzes, homework, papers and participation, sort of like high school. In most unis, however, your test is mainly composed of tests, quizzes and papers. Now I can't claim that ALL uni classes are like this but that's the trend I've seen so far. The biggest thing to learn is that when you transfer, don't slack. Manage your time wisely and keep up with your work. It's very easy to get behind at a Uni simply because a lot of times homework isn't mandatory so people just blow it off and wind up cramming days before the exam. Going to a CC is a good time to establish good study skills. Just make sure you maintain those studying habits after you transfer. Feel free to ask if you have more questions.
Let me know when the sky falls down so I can catch it.

So if I do take those classes..could I still be able to make it into a university?

and If I do go to another CC to retake the placement test can the result be transfer to the CC I want to go to?

I want to go to Berkley.. I don't think those classes will help me. darn it!

If you retake the placement test, it will not transfer to another CC...You will struggle with your english classes if you can't even pass the assessment.
Check on www.assist.org to figure out the classes you need based on your major. Also remember to finish IGETC (your school probably has a list of classes that fulfill each part of IGETC).

i dont think the results transfer but if u do score better at that CC and take the higher lvl eng or math course @ that CC , you can probably transfer that grade to the CC you want to go to

So basically I'm debating between GCC and SMC...

I live closer to Glendale but for some reason I want to attend SMC.

If anyone here has gone to either school can you give an opinion on it? Thanks.

The commute is going to suck if you go from basically glendale to SMC. If you can find how many people GCC sends to your idea school, you can use that to determine whether or not it is a school with a good transfer rate. Honestly you want CC to be a kickback time where you can breeze through everything. You dont want to spend so much time in traffic driving. At least I wouldn't.

I only took a SMC online class and went to the campus once. Its a really nice campus and people everywhere. I say that because at my CC, it felt like a ghost town all the time.

I kind of have the same problem as chuchu728, except I live closer to El Camino College.
Does anyone know if the El Camino Honors Transfer program has a high transfer rate to USC?
I was considering SMC also but yeah it's pretty far. D:

Just go wherever closest to you. SMC is only considered a "good" cc because of the large selection of classes and decent campus. Aim for a high GPA and you will be fine at any CC.

I need some advice. I'm going into my 3rd semester of CC and I probably have 3 more semesters to go too... I want to become an EMT/Paramedic or a Nurse, but that'd take a whole semester off of my transfer plan. Should I just stick with the IGETC and Pre-req to transfer, or do you recommend me to get an EMT certificate and then continue school? I want to get into medical school, so I think getting an EMT certificate at a CC would be a good idea to gain experience?

And here's another scenerio I'm deciding on. I'm focusing on Aeronautical Engineering so that if I don't get into Med School, I can fall back on my degree. Should I join the Air Force to gain experience while going to school?

I'm confused as to if it'll be worth it to slow down my transfer time to gain experience, or if it's better to just stick with transfer courses and transfer in 2 more years as planned.

Unless you're in a rush, go at your own pace. Medical Schools would want to see mainly a high GPA and a high MCAT score (along with EC's etc.) over anything else so you wouldn't technically need that EMT cert. Air Force Academy is a hard school to get into and I'm not sure what the requirements are to get in as a transfer (if they take any). You seem to be all over the place, If I were you I would sit down with an academic counselor (Not your CC counselor but call up a UC counselor and ask when they are visiting your school) and figure things out. It's really hard to be working on a degree for Engineering and going for Med School at the same time, so it would be wise to be sure of your plans instead of making fall back plans.

So my gpa is a 3.9 however I have 4 F's on my transcript. I repeated all the classes I got F's in and got A's the second time. (the f's were removed from my gpa)
I'm applying to UC's, nyu, usc, and cornell. Do I have a chance especially at Ucberkley and ucla or will those f's crush me?

UC's will most likely "turn the other way" when looking at repeated grades, but too much may hurt you a bit. I think you have a good shot at UCLA and berkeley depending on your major and if you are an Out of state student or not. Cornell USC and NYU will however see the F's and that would hurt you.

i'm preparing to transfer to a 4 year school for fall 2010, majoring in art (still deciding between graphic design and photography). to fulfill the 4 year school's "natural world" requirement, i can take biology or physical education in my city college.

i think that bio would look much better on my transcript/application, but 1. it has nothing to do with my major and 2. i have kind of a faulty memory when it comes to lots of details, especially in science.

my gpa right now is a 4.0 and i know that bio is 10x harder in college vs. high school, so i'm nervous about bringing it down (i know a 3-point something isn't terrible, but i want my gpa to be as high as possible). would bio be any less difficult since this is a CC? should i just suck it up and prepare to work a lot for bio, or go ahead and take phys ed?

If it doesn't have anything to do with your major, then why bother taking Bio over Phys Ed? It won't really look "better" since you're applying as an Art major....They will probably focus more on your portfolio or w/e over the difficulty of classes you took.

Transferring to USC is pretty straight forward... Finish their list of requirements for the GE's (listed on their website), Aim for a high GPA (varies on major) around 3.7 should suffice for most, get letter of recs, they ask for your high school stuff +SATs.
