Hey Guys,

Well it seems that i don't really have any subject in particular i'm very good at, so i'm thinking of majoring for a foreign lang. next year, (Japanese). I'm a junior this year and i'm taking Japanese AP year and i really enjoy Japanese. I think i even want to study abroad in Japan one year.

So yea, i was just wondering, what do you think of majoring in a foreign language. Do you think it's wierd or pointless? OR do you think it's worth it...

Thanks for your opinions. happy.gif

My parents always tell me that first and foremost, you have to love your major. No matter how well-paying your future jobs will be, at least you're passionate about what you do and that's all that matters.

BUT ANYWAY, I think it's awesome. I'm sure Japan has high demand for Japanese speakers with very fluent English. The most obvious career would be in translating, maybe?

^Oh wow. My parents are the opposite...something that will guarentee you a job. xDD A good job.

Anyway, I think that's awesome! I'm majoring in East Asian Languages (Japanese & Korean). But I'm gonna do a double major and go ahead with Journalism (Mass Communication) too.

I suggest that you decide on what sort of path you want to go with in Japanese. Do you want to be in business? A teacher? If you want to be a teacher, you can get a minor in English--and teach English in Japan or vice versa. NOte that there are programs you have to take with these too. And if you take the business route, there's a large variety of things to do.

Anyway. I'd like to teach Asian languages but I want another major under my belt just in case. My parents aren't very fond of what I'm choosing but I'm extremely happy with it. ^^ I think it's well worth it! There are many different jobs out there...

*coughack* I want to be a manhwa translator at Tokyopop...keke. ANd then get promoted to a storyboard director (aka, a writer).

i'm considering to double major in chinese and japanese too. i'm already certain i'm going to be a chinese language teacher here or teach english overseas in taiwan or japan, hehe. xD but anyways, you should be certain what you're going to do with it or you can double major or get a master's in something. but i don't think it should be that hard to find a job. you can work in business, government, and education as a translator or teacher if you're just going to major in japanese.

but i think what matters is that you major in what you like. and yeah, there are plenty of opportunities and jobs out there for you so no worries! biggrin.gif

i reckon languages are really interesting and stuff...but i think finding a job might be hard. my parents definitely would not agree to me doing something like that. in the end though, it's really up to you and what you want to do with your life

Unless you plan on being a translator or a teacher, majoring in a language isn't the best because there aren't many options out there. You could always minor in Japanese and have a major in business admin. or something.

My friend really wants to major in Japanese as well because she likes her Japanese classes at our high school. I have no idea what job she wants, though...But personally, I think majoring in a foreign language is awesome.]

I really wanted to major in Japanese too, but I thought it wasn't reasonable to just have that as my single major. You can do a double major if you want - that's what i'm planning on doing. XD

I thinking double majoring (a foreign language & another major that interests you) is really good because it might open up more opportunities. =)

lol my school (School of Foreign Service @ Georgetown) requires everyone of its students to pass a proficiency exam in at least one language (non native) in order to graduate. Thus, it's not even majoring or minoring, but simply something expected because they see it as beneficial to us no matter what field we choose to pursue! smile.gif thus i truly believe there is no "disadvantage" to majoring or minoring in a language, however I would have to say that ONLY focusing your studies on one language would not be quite a smart idea unless you plan to teach in that area or plan to pursue that field of study academically. =]
