(i was gonna put it in sports, but we dont have sports, right?)
(so i thought it would go well with college, since im in college, and it's for my poli class)
(close if needed)

in class, we mentioned this. although the olympics is not until next year,

?: should china have gotten to right to host the olympics? ( i know, we will run out of countries, eventually...)

- china is a communist state, although it has accepted capitalism.
- china still has control over tibet for more than 50+ years.
- china wants taiwan to be part of it.
- china still rules hong kong adminstratively from beijing.
- china has really bad cases when it comes to human rights.

i just want many opinions on this.

to allow china to host the olympics, is it saying that communism is okay? (even though there are many regimes out there)
to allow the country this honor when their human rights law arent that good?
to let the country host even though it has 3 other country under it's hold/ or wants to hold.
are they being appeased???? meaning, are they being treated too nice?

these are just some things in my head.
i want to see if my fellow soompiers are curious bout such thing.

and i dont mean anything bad. i just want opinions.

yes. the olympics is meant to find the best of the best atheletes no matter what their political, religious, etc. beliefs are, restricting a country from participating would ruin the whole idea. and if china wasn't given a right for an olympic bid, they'd probably not opt to join it and that would pretty much be indirectly restricting them from participating. we also allowed many states, such as the soviet union in the past, participate even though they were communist.

i think the olympics should have nothing to do with politics so this shouldn't matter. the soviet union also had many satellite nations that they pretty much controlled and they were still allowed into the olympics.

same as above.

same as above, but i find that this is the fault of IGOs more since they should be used to end violations to human rights, but most states that are involved in IGOs usually only intervene in another state due to violation of human rights only when they have self-interests that would be attainable through helping that state. i'm more of a neo-liberalist in that i believe states only work in their own self-interests, and that sometimes self-interests may be served through IGOs better than violent conflicts and war. but overall, i don't think any of these problems should affect china's bid to the an olympic host since they olympics aren't meant to be a political entity, it wasn't meant to be an IGO, even though do they do have a political undertone.
