needlepeople, twinklefish personally, I think you are both doing inefficient cardio training. The point of cardio is to raise your rate so you burn fat more effectively and to improve your cardiovascular system. If you can do 56 minutes on the elliptical, you're not doing anything near as intense as you need to. You can be stubborn and say it works for you, but I'm telling you, Frequency (how many times you do it a week or whatever) and Duration (time you do it for each session) are FAR less important than Intensity. Decreasing cardio by 1/3 frequency AND/OR 1/3 duration and keeping the same intensity, does not result in much change in results, you can quote me on that. Twinklefish, ONE session of normal running or jogging is better than 2. It keeps your heart rate constantly higher and will keep the heart rate up after you stop running for longer (which means passive fat burning ability is increased for a longer amount of time). But instead of jogging, you can just look into HIIT which is the most effective type of running if your body is conditioned already.

REMEMBER: You HAVE to eat well, you think not eating makes you skinnier?? HELLLLLLL NO. Haha, here is what happens: Your body perceives a starving period as a threat, our bodies through evolution have grown to adapt to these situations by STORING FAT. So guess what, if you starve, and work out or just MOVE, your body uses the protein for energy, which means you LOSE LEAN BODY MASS. Result: a LIGHTER you, not skinnier, just LIGHTER. You will have the same body fat%, only you'll be weaker, less healthy, and smaller. Don't be afraid to eat, and make sure you have SOME fat in your diet.

Haha my body isn't conditioned at all. I'm on the skinny side but lack muscle. I can't really jog non stop for half an hour without killing myself. How do I build my endurance so I can actually exercise for at least half an hour?

you already answered it. you simply just have to work your way up. increase how long you run by a minute or two each time you go run. you'll be there in no time.

Thanks, Ch1nkaling smile.gif That was really helpful.

So would 30 minutes of jogging on the treadmill @ 5 mph and 20 minutes of HIIT on the elliptical be enough for a daily workout? I read somewhere that treadmills aren't good for HIIT because they're too slow and the time it takes to go from one interval to another is too slow to make it possible. Also, if I'm doing HIIT on an elliptical, is it better to have a higher resistance or a lower resistance?

hi, i just read your reply to loOla above and have somewhat a similar question.

profile: 110lbs, 5'1
eats: muelix for breakfast, fried rice for lunch, dinner includes a bit of meat, veggies.. etc.. i think i am doing okay for nutrition - i dont really eat the junkie stuff and usually make lunches for work so i know how much i am eating..

question: i try to swim an hour each week to 'tone' my arms and be fit.. but i know you cant target a section on your body to lose weight and should really do cardio... is there anything else i could do? i dont really like running, and please explain the difference between runing and jogging. i'd like to lose about 5lbs

thx

I'm trying to lose 10lbs but I don't know how to do that! I have a flat stomach & skinny calves but i'm trying to lose some weight off my thighs and get a more toned butt. Does anyone know a way I could lose weight on my thighs? I'm 5'6 1/2 & 140lbs.

Can you get abs from just running? :|..
(assuming i increase the intensity)

edit: another question, what is HIIT?

Hi !

I'm trying to lose fat around my body .. but what's the right way to do so ..
So far I decided to go running 5 times a week approx. 45 min each time, do cruches, but can somebody help me about the muscle-creating-part and tell me what the "right" diet is ?

everyone already has abs, it's just we have fat that covers it. now if you want defined abs, that'll be different. so if you want to see your abs, you have to get rid of the layer of fat. if you want it defined, do ab workouts. running will help rid that layer of fat to show your abs. increasing intensity is definitely the best method.

taken from wiki: HIIT is High-intensity interval training (HIIT). A HIIT session involves a warmup period, several short, maximum-intensity efforts separated by moderate recovery intervals, and a cooldown period. The period of alternating effort and recovery intervals typically lasts a total of 15 minutes.

word of caution, before you embark on this:

HIIT is for well physically conditioned folks so maybe start out just running.

so like Brusky has pointed out, build endurance and work your way there.

This may be a bit of a broad question but what can I do to lose some of the fat on my body? I'm not fat (in terms of looks) but I think the percentage of fat IN my body is higher than I'd like it to be. Like, I'm wondering how to lose the fat on my inner thighs, flatten my stomach, and slim my face down...

And if it's not too much to ask, what can I do to raise my metabolism?

would dancing be a good cardio instead of running/jogging? and i could add crunches, push ups, and situps to that? and if im trying to lose weight what kind of fruits should i stay away from? thanks ^^
edit--
and eating 3 hours. i find it a little bit hard to put into my schedule so it would be just as fine to eat 3 times a day?

Different bodies react in different ways, what works for you may not work for others. Some people can lose weight just as easy as gaining weight and vice versa. Cardio is a must for everyone if you want to stay tone and also build endurance. Best example is running. Swimming is also a great way to tones your body. It requires you to use both your arms and legs which results in a whole body exercise.

Important note about running - If your struggle to breath when your running/jogging, you are too fast for your pace. Your running/jogging pace should be slow enough for you to run non stop for at LEAST 20-30 minutes. When your body gets use to it, you can start picking up the pace slowly. Running will NOT work if your struggling to keep up. Also if possible, try not to run on a treadmill especially in a gym. Run outdoors in a park preferably with trees, it helps you breath better. One last thing, when you're running or jogging, try to run in a rhythm and say it out. Meaning while running, try to repeat the numbers 1 and 2 back and forth. This insures that you are breathing and not just running because if your not breathing properly, you will not see/feel any results.

These are just very basic and effective ways to stay tone and fit. Also, it is more fun and effective to exercise with a friend. Motivate and push each other to their limits. My 2 cent.

i used to lose weight by exercising 2 hrs 5 times a wk and eat very healthily;less sugar, salt, oily food. Within a year i loss like 14kg. After that my mensus did not come for 5 mths and my mum brought me to see the doc and i was made to eat hormone pills coz my fats intake too little... i ballooned back to my previous weight in one mth.. i was sad:(. and after that i find difficulties losing weight even after i started to exercise and eat healthily(less healthily previously though).. i exercise like 3 times a wk of 45 mins to 1 hr each and eat less healthily like previously as i m afraid my mensus did not come again... But i can only manage to lose 3 kg after one yr...
anything that went wrong?

ok, now i'm getting a popping and cracking sound coming from my shoulders. I'm only 26, so i would assume i don't have an arthritic shoulder. However, i get a mild pinching sensation and some soreness. I've stop lifting completely this week and started icing two times a day on my shoulders. It's gotten a little better, but my shoulder still pops. What the heck is going on?

sounds like impingement. do you warm up your rotator cuffs before you work out? i'd get a joint supplement if i were you.

I've just read stuff in here, but I've had a question on my mind for a while so I guess I'll ask haha tongue.gif

Is there an average amount (as in a number or a percentage) of body fat a person should be losing in a month? I'm just wondering because I know that on average, a person should only lose 1-2 lbs a week, but there's not a body fat number.

Since May, I've been losing about 4 lbs and 1% of body fat a month and I'm not upset about it (actually, I'm pretty darn proud of it!), but I'm just curious. Thanks in advance.
