what do you recommend is the best type of workout to lose body fat all around? like from your head to toe NOT like a certain area.. i heard running on a treadmill gets rid body fat all around but i wanna try new things.. is pilates a good workout or is that excercise just to tone up your body?

I'm a college tennis player and play tennis for about 3 hours a day... Every other day I go to the gym and do ellipticals, stationary bikes and the treadmill. I do relly light weight-lifting (as to not bulk up, like 30-40 lbs with 4-6 sets of 13 repetitions).

However... I'm a bit overweight? I should be in the 145ish range but in the 160 range. I'm sure it's my diet however... working and doing all this stuff makes me super hungry hahaha so I stuff myself >_<... but if I don't I feel really groggy/irritated and have no energy to do such activities. Especially tennis.

Not sure what to do or what I can do. I was looking towards diet pills to help shed a few pounds and I'll probably stabilize... but... I don't know about that stuff. It really scares me on a personal level that it will wreck my body or that I'll die from it (since I do a lot of activities).

Yeah, you can't lose body fat in a certain area, so your stipulation isn't helping any. The best type of workout is a balanced one with cardio and resistance training. Are you talking about a particular exercise? I would do something that's a full body exercise (with resistance) like the power clean (high reps) or olympic snatch. But uh... one single exercise isn't going to help, you burn fat by being active... so... go and be active.

I don't think Pilates "tones" your body, nor is it a particularly well-rounded workout, so if that's the only thing you're going to do, you should add some other stuff into the mix.

Sorry kid, but doing really light weight lifting is doing nothing for you. If just going heavy would make people bulk up, we would have a LOT more big guys out there.
Not sure what the question is, since I see only one question mark, but if you think it's your diet, then fix it. Not that hard. Read the thread for some basic suggestions.

Are you talking about diet pills? I personally never trusted such things and don't want to rely on them. That aside, if you are on plateau to losing weight, there are many ways to jump start it. I would recommend a combination of the following to get best results: changing and finding a better diet, different exercise regimen, and cycling calories throughout the week (recommended).

not sure if this was answered before or not but, does regular stretching of the legs help at all towards leg muscle developement?

regular stretching generally makes you more flexible in time. But it would only help leg muscle development along with the appropriate workouts.

Since you're already working out from tennis, and you become hungry afterward, you should try improving on your diet. Eating healthier would help you slim down a lot. When you stuff yourself, is it cuz you're stuffing yourself with fast food and fatty food? If so, there is your problem.

i have a random question.
something i've always wondered.

anyway.
i used to be really really skinny when i was young (close to looking anorexic but not quite)
and i got a lot fatter so i looked nice & toned, you know?
and i was in swim team so i worked out a lot & stuff
but WITHOUT changing my diet NOR my workout routine,
i just started gaining the pounds.
like, i started slabbing them on.. it was like fat was attracted to my body
(..well, it wasnt that dramatic)
but my question is
why did i suddenly gain so much weight when i didnt change anything in my lifestyle?
and it's the same thing right now too.
i eat healthily (not like a vegeterian or somebody who counts every calorie, but i eat pretty healthy-ly)
and i'm in the water all year long
and i'm in the water around 3 hours a day.. all year around (except weekends unless i have a game or a meet or tournament)
but i'm still not losing any fat. matter of fact, i'm getting fatter (little by little bit)
..what's up with that??

wow.. long question.
sorry but i've always wondered why.
:)

^ It's not possible to gain weight out of nowhere, that defeats the law of conservation of mass.
You must've been eating more

Oh this is great! Hope this thread is still active...

oki here goes, I made this new year promise that I'd look like g.i. jane at the end of the year. lolz yea I know... anyways been working out since january but I don't really c the results I want. I weight-lift 3 times a week and do spinning also 3 times a week. Now when I'm having summer holidays I also go for an hour walk in the mornings before breakfast. What else. oh I'm not on a very strict diet except I don't eat products which contain sugar and also try to eat less carbohydrates...

I'm 1,65m tall and weighed 58kg when I started. Now 6 months later I still weigh the same. But I'm more firmer and more tuned. But I don't look like g.i. jane.

Should I be satisfied with my results or is there anything else I can do? Thx in advance!!

To lose more weight you probably need to do more cardio in order to improve the results. Lifting will help you gain muscle mass and a toner body, however, you will not be burning much fat with lifting. Perhaps instead of walks, go for runs. A couple miles for 3-4 times a week should help a bit. Or you can try other types of cardio work. (see my above list)

I started exercising almost 6 weeks ago (starting height/weight: 5'10"ish and 170ish pounds). I started out with just like 5 to 10 minutes of calisthenics which was perhaps too little, but last week I was up to an hour of mixed cardio, weights and calisthenics. As of this week I'm switching over to a schedule where I dedicate a given day to one type of exercise. Saturday and Tuesday are now weight training days, Sunday and Thursday are intense cardio workouts, Friday I'm thinking to do a mixed workout since I can't figure out how to do an hours worth of calisthenics, while Monday and Wednesday I have classes so I take those days as days of rest.

I'm certainly feeling a whole lot better now, even after just a few weeks, but mostly I'm just not so tired all the time.

Are you kidding me? Most people, and by most about 85%, of people have this misconception that weight lifting means a bigger body like the guys you see on TV or in a magazine. It's been proven for a long time that cardiovascular exercise - steady-state endurance exercises, like running, biking, and swimming - burns a lot of calories, especially in constrast to yoga or pilates. However, it's so overrated. For one, Aerobic exercise build little, if any, muscle, which is a crucial component of metabolism. Muscle kills fat, your body burns up to an additional 50 calories a day to just keep that msucle alive. For instance, by just adding 6 pounds of muscle, you're burning 300 calories each day just sitting still.

Two: Once your burn those calories on the treadmill or whatever, and see how much calories you burned, that's it. Unlike weight training which THROUGHOUT the whole day you burn calories repairing, creating, and maintaining muscle. Like someone else said previously, if weight lifting equates to larger body mass and not burning fat, then you would see a LOT more big guys/girls around. In essence, by not weight lifting, you're not only missing an oppurtunity to burn fat, but also losing all-important and powerful muscle.

I could go in depth MUCH more, but I'll restrain and let that soak. Again, don't believe in the stupid misconception and educate yourself.

I'm gonna go right out there and say it's your diet. It's that simple. I don't know the timeframe in which you want to lost that weight but 10kg is a lot. Fix your diet. Breakfast is what stops your body from going into a catabolic state and gets the nutrients, etc. that you need throughout the day. What they say is true, breakfast is the most important meal of the day, to some effect. I believe that eating MORE, but SMALLER, meals throughout the day gives way to better results. It's good that you do some workout everyday and some cardio. Because you want to cut some pounds/fat, I suggest you increase your cardio a bit and try to change it up so your body doesn't get used to it. For example adding in high-intensity-interval-training (HIIT). Google it if you want more info. But fix your diet first, it'll help immensely. Hope that helps. smile.gif

Weight lifting does not burn much fat. If you really want to lower your bf% cardio and diet is the best way to go. And for instance do you know that unless your on gear it takes longer than a month to gain 6 pounds of muscle? And that's for males to with a diet thats good and hard lifting, even with that most guys dont gain 5 pounds of muscle in a month. You can burn that 300 calories by running for a few minutes, Im thinking cardio is better for burning calories. I don't know what your trying to prove here other than trying to sound smart.

and sorry but since your correcting other peoples mistakes if you dont eat something that digests slowly such as caseine protein your body will go into catabolic state while your sleaping not in the morning
