ok ive asked this question many times before but the advice/tips I've been getting haven't really helped too much. Here's my question again, what is the best way to naturally make my hair look flat on the sides? I've done the thinning/layering thing a bunch of times and told the hairdresser that I want my sides to look flat without product, but it still always looks somewhat poofed which really annoys me =(. This seems like such a simple thing but it's been very frustrating for me. My hair is naturally straight and is medium length, so I would like to avoid using a straightener. Is it a matter of just growing my hair longer to make it look flatter? If thinning/layering the sides don't really work for me, is the best way to just grow it long from the top of my head and leave the sides short? Or is that a bad way to do it? Any other methods without using products/straighteners to get a flat look on the sides? I HATE POOFS!

Here's some pics again for the look I'm going for:

very simple look, natural, and sides FLAT not poofy, what is the secret?!? Again, when I posted these pics awhile back ppl replied that they can be achieved without using products and by layering/thinning out the sides, and that hasn't really worked out for me... Advice needed!

well each one of the products is for a different type of hair
so we will need to know a few things from you before we can recommend

1) Hair length
2) How strong of a hold you want
3) typically how you style your hair
haha i know how you guys feel
my stylists moved back to korea
:[

well I'm still growing it out =P but I'm planning to get the hair in the picture I posted a few posts back but for the record I'll post it again...

I want a hold so that if I get tired of leaving it all down I can mess with it and it can give that crazy look even after a couple of hours...but most times it's left down like in the picture but I was debating between Blue and Orange since they said it's for the longer cuts? although if it gives a shiny look I dont want that either...

and you guys talk about these stylists that seem hecka expensive...I go to Fantastic Sams and the franchise there cuts my hair just like I want it huh.gif

Dude, some people have poofy hair by nature, some have flat hair, and some have spikey hair. It's just the way it is. You have to straighten straighten straighten. It takes less than 5 minutes to hit your whole head! Don't be lazy now lol.

haha yea you definitely got me on the lazy part, hence why i dont wanna use products/straighteners on my hair. So ur saying keep using a hair straightener? I've never used one, is it hard to use one with medium length hair? Any other suggestions? Thanks.

Er... hi. I'm new here. ^^
I hate to digress from the topic at hand, but I recently got a medium length shaggy cut, yet the one thing that's always baffled me was how to style it. I mean, I tried looking at the videos at the beginning of the thread demonstrating how, but it'd be easier for me if I knew what they were saying rather than just following by example.

If there's a link or post/thread in the forums, then sorry. I'm just kinda busy at the moment and I was hoping one of you guys could help me. Thanks.

look at my post in the gatsby moving rubber thread. it has the mini guide in english. it sorta has what the gatsby tv vids say, but in english. meh, vague, but a starter.

you can also checkout this guy's 2 posts on the sufu forums. he gives pretty good detail about how to go about it.... POST 1 // POST 2

if you dont wanna use products, you probably can "train" your hair to be flat. probably by flattening it down after a shower? or heating it with a blowdrier in the way that you want? or just using good old water and combing it the way you want everyday. thats probably the only way if you dont wanna use products to plaster your hairy sides to the side of your head rolleyes.gif

I used to have long hair, now I don't. However, what I did out of the shower was put on a straightening balm that was activated by heat. I used L'oreal's Hot Straight. You can fine a lot of straightening serum/conditioners too that you put in overnight or during day. Those make your hair feel a little icky though. You probably don't need them, but worth a try? Anyways, blow dry with the Hot Straight or something to protect your hair from damage. While you blow dry, comb your sideburns down to the direction that you want, so it won't be tangle. Then, with your straightener, tilt your head to the left and grab a section of hair and straighten. Repeat with the other side and anywhere else. This worked for me, anyone else is free to suggest.

I grew my hair for about 7-8 months, from very short, and this is the result:

I use a hair straightener and a bit of gatsby green/orange here and there - however, since I got an important job interview this week, I just had a haircut... I let my girlfriend cut it for me, which took about 2 hours, but she's really good and careful at it. I showed her pics of Aaron yan's style and she pretty much made it similar. Now my sideburns are like super long, but it looks really nice.

i would have to say try straightening it.
the first few times it might take a bit to get used to
but now i can straighten my whole head in 5 min or less

yea. i would say maybe grey would be best for you it has a strong hold and no shine
blue gives a wet look and i dont think you would want that
and the orange is for a wavy look, kinda like permmed hair

copied from gatsby thread
Spiky Edge [PINK] - For v. short to short hair - Creates wild and 3D style spiky hair that lasts all day
Wild Shake [PURPLE] - For medium short to short hair - Creates a casual messy look
Air Rise [GREEN] - For medium short to medium hair - Creates bounce and airyness with a light setting
Loose Shuffle [ORANGE] - For short to medium long hair - Creates a natural wavy look easily
Cool Wet [BLUE] - For short to medium hair - Creates a glossy wet finish without stickiness
Grunge Mat [GREY] - For v. short to medium short hair - Creates a natural look with mat finish
