For those who know about the Chai Vang shootings that happened in Wisconsin sometime in 2005, what do you think of this facebook group? Do you think these people are being racist? The administrator says they're just making a joke of the whole deal. A lot of my friends have reported them for being racist towards the Hmong population, but they haven't been taken down. From reading the wall posts, all the Hmong FBers are greatly offended, but the administrator keeps telling them to take it as a joke. As Facebook being mainly a college thing, I was ust wondering what you guys think.

The group has little purpose other than to make fun of Hmong through a racial stereotype that they're dangerous hunters for two reasons. First, if the group was really, genuinely concerned about firearm safety, and hunting safety in particular, the group should not be focused so intensely on the Hmong population, but on all hunters in general. Moreover, the admission from the administrator that they are making a joke of the whole deal pretty much defeats any argument to the contrary--that it is a serious attempt at promoting safety.

With that said, whether the group is racist depends on whether you think making fun of a race based on racial stereotypes is itself racist.

In any case, the group certainly has poor taste, making fun of racial stereotypes notwithstanding. Making fun of a tragedy such as a killing is something that simply raises eyebrows and reflects poorly on those joining the group. My $0.02.

Yeah, I believe that's pretty much what racism is... I haven't actually looked at the group (I have a bet with a friend where I can't use facebook until school is over), from what I read from both of you, I think it's wrong... Even if he was simply making a joke out of the whole thing, I don't think it's ever appropriate to be joking around about something like a shooting. People like that are just stupid, and quite frankly, piss me off.

i reported it. It is indirectly stereotyping ALL HMONG people as killers and that we, Hmong people, do not attend hunting classes.

It is false and man.. if i ever see who ever made that group.. i'd love to shoot him or her.

why report it? let it be, let those comments stay, and then see how many of them have luck finding a job after potential employers check out the things they have to say about admitting to being racist... not to mention those horrible spelling errors (e.g., "By calling caucasians racist, you just made me want to live up to that name! Minus well deserve the name that I am being called, no?")

then again, facebook is pretty closed off to people who don't have accounts... you should try to get them to move this stuff to myspace.

i'm half kidding. if you're offended you should definitely report it and have the group shut down. but there's maybe something to be said about letting people continue to make themselves look bad.

some americans dont even know why hmong peeps are here in the states.
that's cause we helped them fight against communist... and they turn their backs on us.

racism is all over. hmong gets it, other races get it too.

Seriously, don't worry about it. It's a joke group, there's plenty of them around.
