Chantix is prescription for a reason...
But to help him quit, tell him to eat small little snacks (like sunflower seeds) or something that takes his cravings away. Basically, something to chew on so he doesn't get restless and focus on his cravings.

i've been a smoker for a while.. it's not easy to quit, and nor do i want too. Everytime I tired, i've failed... so I give up. Your friend has to be ready to quit, cause it's not only physical dedication but mental as well.

first off, does your friend want to quit? or you just getting this stuff for him and hope that he'll quit?
because basically it won't work unless he's willing.

hahaha and yea Chantix is prescription only so obviously you need a script for it. There really is no other way around it.

You can try to get the patch for him. It'll be the next easiest to use besides a pill and it can help with the cravings.
Other non prescription options are the gum, nasal spray, lozenges, and inhaler.

Other tips you can give him are to be aware of and modify his habits. Sometimes smokers smoke out of habit (like after a meal, or when they take a break from work, etc...) So if he knows when he usually smokes and takes precautions to avoid it then that can also help.

(hahaha I just learned about smoking cessation. Oh yea if he does go with the non script stuff follow the directions carefully because there is a minimum of how much you NEED to use for it to be effective)

does he WANT to quit?
if not.. its useless.. really.. even if you force him and everything.

i helped my friend "try to quit" he only smokes one a day now.. which is really good seeing how he smoked almost 2 packs every day before.
just keep him occupied.. me and my friend used to go swimming or shoot pool.. etc etc.. stuff like that to get his mind off of ciggs.

he also use this patch...and he said it really work... i think it was nicoderm?? im not sure .. let me ask him..

sorry dont know anything about chantix.
It's just life.

yep, as everyone else has mentioned. the main thing is, he has to want to quit as well. otherwise, you helping him is just going to be a waste of time.

where i live, you can get nicotine patches/gum.. without prescription, i'm pretty sure.

but it's really hard, so good luck =)

w0rd. I think I've tried once and was like meeeh.

I think the best way to quit is to have something in your mouth e.g. Chuppa Chups, chewing gum etc. Also, it's better to go cold turkey. Nicotine only stays in the system for 2-3 days. The "addiction" is highly psychological.

if this is a surprise, don't bother because it may backfire unless your friend genuinely wants to quit and has come to you for help because he is unable to quit on his own. i've been smoking for over three years now and it's really annoying when friends come up with schemes to make me quit, especially since i don't want to. yes yes yes, we smokers know we're slowly killing ourselves but we don't want to quit.
on the other hand, if the situation is such that your friend wants to quit, then to be honest it is really about mind over matter. the addiction is more mental than physical. we wake up in the morning and have our first cigarette, take our breakfast then smoke another cigarette, etc. it's a habit that has been inculcated into our lifestyles. it is as much a part of our life as brushing our teeth, for example. perhaps slowly weaning your friend off cigarettes is the way to go, or getting nicotine gum. even calling a help line for smokers who want to quit will help. there are many ways to go about doing it, just which way would be the most suitable for him.
