if you do not call what firemen or soldiers do brave, or that they are not heroes, then shame on you
just because it's their job does not make them any less of a hero
or just because it was caused by humans does not make them less then heroes
everything is caused by humans
it was indirectly the man's fault for getting stuck in the subway or whatever
p.s. iraq started 9/11? ....

A teacher who was escorting students out and trying to save them at the shootings of Columbine.

There's a psychological term to what you're talking about, I just can't remember it. I'll get back to you on that, haha.
Edit:
Altruism!
Altruism: Altruism refers to unselfish behaviors or actions done for the sake of someone else. For example, if you volunteer at a nursing home, or give money to someone in need, etc., you are helping someone else without receiving benefit. However, there is debate about altruism - some people who say altruism doesn't "really" exist because you do get something out of unselfish acts - you feel good about yourself. I'll leave it to you to decide if altruism exists.

Hope this helps.
Edit 2:
Aww, nevermind about the Columbine shooting. The term still applies though.

I wasn't calling them not brave. It's just that my teacher told us that we could not use it and that we should think it as of 'aliens' planning to destroy human population because they think that we are selfish, insensitive and cruel and that they would try to contradict us in logical ways. Indirect ways are okay or nobody would have anything to write.
And sorry i wasn't trying to say iraq started 9/11, i meant that the events of 9/11 was caused by terrorists and that this led to war with Iraq and stuff.
Sorry for the confusion.

The hard thing is that it can't really have anything that can relate to something that was caused by human's fault.
there was a segment today on CNN about a woman who protected her kids from a shark after getting bitten herself. i didn't really watch, but i think it would fulfill your criteria.
you can also talk about the disaster relief workers that came to new orleans after the advent of hurricane katrina.
