So my question is do these cd's actually work?!
Does anybody have personal experiences with vocal home study courses?
And if you do which one do you recommend?

i dl'ed the Brett Manning speech singing thing from here a while ago...i'm pretty sure it works, but i couldn't bring myself to use it properly...he's too condescending...very know-it-all....and annoying when he tries to be funny.
sooo i'd just recommend getting a real live person to teach you and just use the home study to supplement your lessons..because only a real live person can evaluate your progress and correct your mistakes...in real-time so to speak.

Well my friend used Brett Manning's CD. She said it was helpful for her to first go to CD 6 and do the crying hingey things for like a week or two because that develops the head voice. Then she started from CD3 (where the vocal exercises start) and she has been doing it for a while. Her voice is becoming a little stronger. The only drawback is that before when her range was smaller, she had a more soulful/powerful chestvoice and now while having acquired mixed voice and headvoice, her voice still is soulful, but isn't as powerful. Maybe because she's still working on it and has a lot more to do, but she's happy because she can sing to the 6th C on the piano (soprano high C) and sometimes higher but she lost a bit of power to her voice (which she's hoping will come with additional practice).
I also agree with the person above. They can work but it's not the same as having somebody teach it to you. Sometimes you might have questions and they might not get answered during the CD. Or you think you might be doing a technique differently and not sure if what youre doing is right. Or you might not be getting results in the indicated time as said on the CD. You need an instructor/teacher to pinpoint what you're doing wrong, and help you work on your weak points and strengthen your strengths.
So basically, instructor>Brett Manning's SS. But if you can't afford the instructor, Brett Manning's SS is the way to go. And essentially Seth Rigg's stuff is the same as Brett Manning's except that Brett has a lot more exercises and helps you work on adlibbing and stylings.

Yoyo, your friend from my understanding and assumption, has only bridged her chest to head voice and still is on the way to finding full voice by adduction, approximation, compression (I'm not sure on this last matter) etc of the vocal folds. She is getting there, she should definitely continue! The rewards are awesome!
Her voice has gone softer than before only for the fact that she must be in a lighter mix (I think... not sure, but Brett might call this headvoice, when the folds aren't fully adducted *I think adducted is the right term here* but only at the front). Soon, after a while, she will find how to adduct the whole way, and this is where the rewards lie

Ok, these aren't my personal experiences first hand, but from my knowledge of other (real) vocal students, and of other vocal student experiences of these products (some of these vocal students have gone to teaching now, so they know thier stuff).
Eric Arceneaux - Apparently from one person (who's gone to vocal teaching now), the product is bad. Apparently Eric or whoever can't even stay on pitch right, or something like that. This isn't a much spoken about product IMO.
Seth Riggs - So called inventer of the SLS technique, apparently I heard, his products are great, but I think it was too short. Wasn't it two CDs?
Brett Manning - Level 5 student of Seth Riggs - High price product, only heard good things about it, and seems worth. The only bad thing is, it doesn't cover vibrato heavily, you must purchase a seperate package (I think US$50 from memory).
Let me tell you something, real vocal students in my eyes, should get these packages. If you are serious, then they are worth. The Brett Manning products are great, 12 CDs (or download), and even a short booklet. I've PERSONALLY HEARD very unexperience singers, just transform into a much much better level a 6 mponths to year or so down.
My recommendation if you really are serious, grab the Brett Manning SS stuff for US$200 first, because it is a better explained version of Seth's I've heard. Secondly, I feel that the true SLS singing technique is far too "safe", so people tend to come out sounding weak in the end (no offence to any SLS singers out there). Brett, a past SLS student, apparently built his technique on top of this. I heard his voice demonstration, it's quite thicker (heavier, fuller) than what I've heard from other "real" SLS singers.
If you can't afford it, you should look at Seth's stuff.
Usually, vocal students buy them all
I also heard good stuff about Caroline Sadoline's CVT (http://www.jeroenman...VTreviews.htm).
If you have any other questions in regards to vocal singing in the modern pop genre, just drop me a PM or reply.

Oh no, I made a mistake above.
I mixed a young new comer (so it seems) teacher with another.
Apparently, above I mentioned that Eric Arceneaux's products was to be avoided.
I mixed him up with Eric Frey. So it was Eric Frey, to be cautious about.
I remember Eric Arceneaux, seen his teachings from youtube. They look OK (to me), without being BIAS, his singing might be a little light for your taste. You should youtube them. Brett definitely has a more thicker (and stronger) voice on the high notes IMO. It seems he likes to approach things lightly in my ears.
