Honestly...I don't know how this exactly came to be, but its like some internet phenomenon. I've read it started from some World of Warcraft forum or from Family Guy.
I don't know....but Rick Astley is definitely 80s. I remember hearing his music in the 90s on the Lite FM Music radion station here in NYC. LOL Now that I've actually seen the music videos to his songs, they made me crack up so much! His dancing and how the people look in the videos..it looks soo...80s? IT'S SO BAD! The first time I heard him on radio I thought he was actually some black dude, but he turned out to be some scrawny looking white dude.
HAHAAH I didn't know whether to put this into General or Humor.

I have not been rick-rolled, since I don't go on any forums that do it. Though I considered bringing the phenomenon to Soompi. But this thread ruined it. 
Anyway, I didn't know how exactly it started... but as far as I knew, Rick-Rolling is when you go to a forum/section of a forum centered around something. You tell the people that you've got a link to some video or something that's totally awesome and convince them that it's something they'd be interested in. But then you link them to Rick Astley.
For example, I would go over to the Super Junior thread and be all "OMG guys! I just saw this video of the boys now for the first time. I thought I should share it because it's SO CUTE!" But then I'd link them to Rick Astely's "Never Gonna Give You Up," and everyone would phail THE END.
Once I Rick-rolled my sister. Hah. Good times. XD

it started on 4chan, sum1 posted a "trailer" to GTAIV on there...which lead to the Rick Astley vid...thus becoming being rickrolled.
and yes i have, on gamefaqs, for the new harry potter "trailer" gotdamnit!!
