I'm 22 soon and I'll be transfering to a university this fall. I would have graduated university this year along with my friends and old classmates if I hadn't fall behind. I fell behind because I'm a slow learner, slower than most students.

Now I've only completed two years of college and I have two more years to go until I graduate. My parents aren't happy with this and they're giving me a hard time since my cousins are also graduating this year. And they keep ranting about how slow and stupid I am. And they're very ashamed that I'm behind everyone in my family and the people they know.

I feel I'm the only one behind. What about you guys? If you have anything to say about yourselves (or your friends or the people you know) about being behind, then spill it.

i know several friends in the same boat as you. Two of my friends kept dropping courses because they felt their workload was too high or they weren't getting a good mark in a particular course. The result is that they have to spend at least 2 extra years to graduate.
One of these friends even decided to take a year off to work!
Another friend just can't concentrate in her degree (life sciences) so she takes like 3 courses a semester max and barely passes them. She's also going to probably spend an extra year.
Another friend couldn't decide her major. Logically, she feels sciences are better but is more interested in geography. Result? an extra year.
Me, I had to go to another country and ended up skipping a semester. Now that I'm back, I have to spend an extra year just making up for what I missed since I had to drop full year courses too. Result? I won't graduate until I'm 23, rather than 22. Then, if I decide to pursue further studies, another 2-3 years after sad.gif Keep in mind, my gpa is pretty crappy too (2.44/4)
Just highlighting how common this is. Everyone has their strengths and weaknesses. Maybe you're not using the right method of learning.
As long as you're comfortable with yourself and what you're accomplishing, it's all good. I understand where your parents are coming from but I've also seen a lot of people finish uni in 4 years and then realize they hate the field they're in and spend ANOTHER extra 3-4 years trying to gain education in a completely different field.
As long as you make sure you're going to stay with this degree in the future, graduating at 24 isn't that bad considering other people who switch degrees etc.

if you are slow then take one class at a time so that you can focus.

most of my graduating high school class graduated last year c/o 2006 on time. i transferred from a CC to a university this past school year and will be a second semester junior in the fall... so i can kinda understand where you're coming from.

Asian parents love comparing their kids to other kids. Just try to ignore it and do the best you can. I know some unnies and oppas in my university and there's one oppa who's a junior but he's like 9 years older than me -0- (I'm 19)

My parents totally hated it when my uncle "wasted" his time at college. He didn't know what he wanted to do for the rest of his life, so he took his time. He graduated this year from GA Tech at the age of 28 with a computer engineering degree.

I know I have to push myself so that I don't fall behind. I've changed my major two times already, but I'm not behind at this point because the majors all kind of relate to each other, so I haven't taken a class that I didn't need. But honestly, my school requires so many core classes (PLUS the classes in your area of study), that it's impossible to finish in 2 years. Yeah, I go to a CC now because it's a lot cheaper. u_u

yeah, i have to agree that asian parents love comparing students with other students. they just want to have a good reputation.

my philosophy is dont let your parents know. what they dont know wont hurt 'em.

it's your life. live it.
i'm behind by a year in college as well. my parents are constantly pressuring me to 'study more'. screw that. i'm not going to overload myself with work and end up failing classes just to stop hearing it from my parents.
i agree somewhat with krndreamer. i don't let my parents know everything. just bits and pieces so they'll just lay off.

weird scholarship program in high school set me back two years because they didn't think my english was good enough (damn those singapore ministry of education people!)... pretty ridiculous... i'm 22 and i have a couple of more years to go as well... my only saving grace is the fact that i'm graduating with honors and a double major... but yeah, most of my friends (aside from those who were on the same scholarship program) are working and/or married...

i transferred from one cc to my local cc, and i hated it..but i also didn't know what degree i wanted to take up. i think i've changed majors atleast 3-4 times, but finally found the direction i wanted to go hopefully. my 2 friends are transferring from cc to uni this year, and we're all around the same age.. 19-21

i've tried to push myself to do something i think i'd be interested in..but i found the classes so boring. i'm glad i actually stayed at cc longer than i should have cuz i had NO clue what i wanted. i'm waiting to hear back from the 2 colleges i applied to happy.gif

i'm behind a semester because i transfered majors and universities after my freshman year. i'm trying hard to make it up by taking summer school. if i knew then what i know now, i wouldn't be in this position but what can you do? luckily my parents are understanding about it. i know it's easier said than done, but don't let your parents words get to you. everybody moves at different speeds. what's important is that you move at your own course and do a good job at it.

hell im 22, and i am now considering studying i am some way behind most of you guys but who cares what other people think right. as long as you are happy. remember at worst case, you got 40 years ahead of you! if you graduated at 25. plenty of time to develop your career, have a business and invest etc. etc.

what for. sure after graduating uni they will look at your academic transcript, but after min. 2 years of experience i doubt most will even look at this transcript. also, i know of graduates who finished with work experience under their belts and many employers skipped the transcript part, is just not all that important, at least here in australia.

I spent my first 1.5 yrs of college as a biochem/pre-med student, then decided it wasn't for me. I spent the last 1.5 yrs completing transfer requirements for art school, and after 3 years, I'm finally moving on. I'm transferring to California College of the Arts as a Sophomore, so technically I'll be 2 years behind. At first it really bothered to be "behind," as I was used to always being ahead of the curve (in terms of always being in AP/Honors classes, etc.), but I'm much much happier now and I wouldn't have it any other way. I'll be finished in 3 years. smile.gif

Me( raise hand)..I'm way behing now..I'm suppose to graduate in 06 and now I'm not half way through b/c there were so many things in my life keep happening...like death in the family my dad just recently passed away from committed suicide..omg that kills me inside....he was sick for very long time that has put a lot of stress on all of my family members, I got in 3 accidents, overwork to support myself, but I have a really good job though, but just overwork myself, I have no parents and other junks stuff keep happening hahahah. Although, I'm behind but I'm not going to give up, I dont' care how long it's going to take me to finish school, I dont' want to be a college drop out or a failure because I don't want to live in regrets, I've worked way too hard to be where I am at and I'm not a book smart, either like some people I know, I was on an academic probation before b/c I refuse or didn't know how to look for help, now I tell myself go get help immediately, when I have problems. But at least I'm not dumb about other things lol. Well, my older brother was in college for 7 yrs because of what we went through he finally graduate this year..yay..as long as u don't give up..u will succeed. Although, life was hard for me I know there are people out there who have it harder. So don't complain about little things find a way to solve it. Failure is a choice, so don't give up too easily.
