Hi.
I am a slacker.
I have failed math repeatedly.
My GPA is downright horrible (around 3.0)

However,
my SAT scores are opposite from GPA - 2000+

What do my kind of people do?
Im guessing it says (to colleges),
"hi. I sucked in school and then I realized if I continue at this rate I'll end up in some crap school so I studied like crazy for the SATs and did okay on them."

Its always possible to explain the low GPA and stuff like that but I dunno if I wanna waste my time justifying my weaknesses which may cause them to stand out more.

My friend had only somewhere from 1200 to 1350 on the old SAT.
Her GPA was 3.6? weighted, had 3 extracurriculars (musical instrument + 2 community service), no sports, no leadership positions. And she now she's in UCSD (which is good considering how average her abilities are). I think her essay was pretty good though.

Well, I don't know. Your SAT score balances some of it out. I guess your essay is like your last chance.. impress with what you've got smile.gif

no i think it just says that you're lucky so you did well. or maybe it says that you're one of those people who are smart, but didn't try in school.

GPA is much more important than the SAT.

true, GPA is more important than the SAT -- the college admissions people told us in high school that a high SAT score and a low GPA indicates that you're smart but don't try hard, which isn't what they want to see. but when i was in high school (a long, long time ago), my SAT and ACT scores were all right (iono how to convert it into the new scale but i guess they were at least 95th percentile) but my cumulative GPA was something pretty horrible, like 3.3 or 3.4. but in my case it rose from 2.4 freshman year to 3.85 junior year (unweighted), so when i applied to college early senior year (i only applied to one, umich) i used my essay to explain that my GPA showed that i'd learned to be more responsible and mature about schoolwork since then and blah blah blah. i spent so much time on that essay too, b/c i felt that that more than anything else could showcase my abilities. like someone up there ^ wrote, it's really your chance to explain yourself, as well as show some of your personality. as for me, i got accepted w/in two weeks, so maybe working hard on the essay did help.

but then again... i kinda lied in that essay. i hadn't learned to be more responsible about schoolwork, and that just showed as soon as i got to college and had no idea what i was doing there. but that's another story... just, you know, if you find you think you're not ready for college and you don't think you'll do well, you should know there are always other alternatives than heading to college right after high school, like traveling or working for a year.

if your gpa is really low they already DO stand out lol. i think its worth it to explain in your case.. however if your grades a little bit lacking then it might not have as good effects

The single most important aspect of your college application is that high school transcript of yours. And this is a fact: it's stated in probably almost every college booklet.

Although both GPA and SAT scores are just numbers, GPA does describe the type of person more than the SAT scores. Just think about it for a second -- motivation, diligence, and dedication or a bit more intelligence? Of course, I'm completely ignoring the grade inflations present these days (I can easily and confidently admit that my high school is at least 10x more difficult that one school in, let's say, Iowa).

But to balance things out, inflated GPAs are okay. Personally, as a New Yorker, I'm not competing with some Iowan hillbilly (sorry to all ya'll iowans! representttttt! lol). I know that my competitors come from New York. With that said, I guess you can say the SAT is sort of a "uniform" measurement of all the applicants.

Colleges aren't looking for people who score well on tests and exams -- they want people who will continue to succeed in college and everything that comes afterwards.

it's not the end of the world. when I was in HS, I failed Algebra 2, had a GPA of 2.5, very low SAT score (didn't study), had to go to a lesser university (initially..).. then I got my act together, transferred to a better one and ended up graduating with a high gpa, deans list and all that jazz and now can go to Law school.

lol my friend got a 1590 on the old SAT [he missed one math question]. and i'm not sure if he's even in top 10%. i think he might be, but he's not up high.

i don't really like these standardized tests because it just basically measures how well you can take tests. you just need to develop the skill. but i guess this is the only way they can compare students "equally."

Whoa, you HAVE to teach me how you studied and what you studied with because my way sure sucks.

HEY.

YOU AND I ARE IN THE SAME BOAT.

That's cool. I have the same gpa as you, 3.0 and I did pretty kickass in my ACT and SAT. That's cool. What colleges did you apply to?
