I have been thinking about getting a cellphone for a while now since I will be going off to college in a few months and my parents refuse to buy me a cellphone thinking that I will run the bill. etc. etc.
So, i am thinking about getting a prepaid cellphone because:
1. i dont use many minutes. i only need a phone to find people/friends if i need to go out and meet with them or ask them where they are and to make phone calls to my supervisor for work to tell them i will be late or not coming in/ or that i am stuck in traffic without having to pay an absurd 25cents everytime at a nasty dirty payphone.
2. I dont have that much money to be able to pay off monthly bills for cellphones. so anything with monthly payments plans are out of the question.
I was wondering what plans, or service providers offer the best price and reliability based on your experience or knowledge from other friends and family members who have used prepaid cellphones before.
There are A LOT Of different companies and I want to do my research before i go out and get one. Boost mobile, virgin mobile, T-Mobile etc.etc all have prepaid but i was wondering if there were more options? what is the pricing? how reliable is the service?
also, the way the phone looks is not a big issue (as long as it doesnt look chunky and big), i just need a working phone.
Thanks!

I've read there plans, since my parents are going prepaid too, and to me, I think Cingular or Virgin Mobile is the best. Simply because you buy a card, input the number and you get your minutes. Then you can have your minutes there for a long time and put more in if you need it.
I have T-mobile with contract and I get good service in my area. Check the coverage map on there site for your location. I looked at T-mobile prepaid options and it sucks. Pay $10 for XX minutes and it expires by the end of the month. I don't like that or maybe I just read it wrong.

I use t-mobile prepaid and it works really well for me.
All prepaid minutes expire at some point for most phone companies.
For tmobile, the larger the amount you buy every time you refill, the longer you can use those minutes. If you've used $100 dollars worth of minutes, all your minutes after that don't expire for a year.
Also, I like their fixed minute cost, it changes depending on your refill but it doesn't contain any thing like daily access fee or whatever, I know cingular's go phone has that, or minutes are $$$ for the first how many minutes then $$$ after that... Those are really annoying if you want to keep track.
