What file system is it set at? If its FAT or FAT32, thats the reason. Fat32 has a maximum file size of 4gb
You might want to format the drive to NTFS (note formatting a drive will delete all the data on it)

usually external hard drives have a default formatting of FAT32, because of its compatibility with different OS's. if you're mainly a windows user, its best if you format it to NTFS.
to check what formatting your hard drive is in....view the properties of your hard drive....
like awdark said, formatting your hard drive will erase its memory. you'd want to move all your files back onto your computer first. then reformat your hard drive. then move it back onto your newly formatted hard drive.
take extra care when formatting WHICH hard drive, you won't want to do it on your C drive =.=
yeah. and formatting takes a long time.
