fin depends a lot on what kind of school you go to
the finance cirriculum at a state school and ivy league are on totally different levels
so its hard to say how difficult it will be without knowing where you are attending

as for careers, most fin majors go into corporate finance, ibanking, or trading out of school
internships, as always, are competitive, once again it depends on where you attending and how much recruiting your school gets
a lot of finance majors aspire to be in asset management/private equity
basically anything that goes on in wall street is good for fin majors

I pick Finance cux I don't like Accounting. Finance is like the next best thing.
I'm planning to get an internship in Goldman Sach, Bear Stern, or Merrill Lynch.

It will alway be competitive in the business field. The good benefit is that my college is near Wall Street so I can get more internship opportunities compared to other business school.

Finance is pretty broad. You can be an investment banker to an financial manager. So it really depends on your concentration.
For me, I concentrate on the management side so I focus on helping people managing their finance or advising them on how to manage their money.

Hope this helps.

I'm a finance and management major. I chose finance because I didn't really know what else I wanted to do, and Accounting bites, marketing ish bleh, MIS is not my thing.

There several field you can touch upon while your in finance. You can do banking, investment firms, real estate, or a finance engineer and a number of other things. The reason I like it is cause you can do any of those in the finance field. I actually got accepted to intern at Merrill Lynch for the Fall 07, but I turned it down because my schedule is too stacked. I'm currently interning at another investment firm for the summer too see if I like being a Certified Financial Planner, if not then I can do other things in the finance field.

Well at the moment I am doing Finance major specifically investment analysis along with majoring in math.
I chose finance, since Pre-Med is a pain to do compared to finance. The plan for me is to start out as a financial analyst then become an investment banker and then an M&A specialist or get MBA + PhD and specialize in stochastics.
However I guess in a way business is competitive, but competition brings out the best.

why did you pick this major?
- i wanted to make money

what kind of plans do you have after receiving your degree? (what kind of job)
-i already graduated. I have a job in finance.

is it particularly difficult?
-nope.

what kind of work will we have to do?
-for coursework? Investment theory, usual math courses, basic economics, corp finance......all finance programs are similar in coursework.

is it hard to get an internship?
-if you're lazy, yes. If you start early, chances are good. If you have bad grades, its' impossible.

is this field competitive?
-high level finance is ultra-competitive. Finance attracts a high proportion of type-A personalities.
"But when it ends and while it ends, something comes, after so much rage, persistence, obstinacy, extravagance; something entirely unexpected and touching in its mildness and goodness. With the motif passed through many vicissitudes, which takes leave and so doing becomes itself entirely leave-taking, a parting wave and call, with this D G G occurs a slight change, it experiences a small melodic expansion. After an introductory C, it puts a C sharp before the D. . .and this added C Sharp is the most moving, consolatory, pathetically reconciling thing in the world. It is like having one's hair or cheek stroked, lovingly, understandingly, like a deep and silent farewell look. . . . " (Mann: 55).

why did you pick this major?
Incase MIS is no longer in demand in the future & to gain personal knowledge.

what kind of plans do you have after receiving your degree? (what kind of job)
You could always go into corporate finance if you don't like selling. Or financial advisor (Although any major could get this job... I personally think it's a waste to earn a finance degree and become a financial advisor)

is it particularly difficult? what kind of work will we have to do?
Analysis, proformas... It requires analytical thinking and knowledge of various financial components.

and... is it hard to get an internship? is this field competitive?
In business, every field is competitive....

I'm doing Finance, and in fall I will start my first semester in the cohort at Eller. I chose finance cause Accounting is boring for the most part, Marketing is all about statistics which I hate, and MIS is sooo not my thing. I like the idea of being the person who helps someone manage their money and plan for the future. But the main reason I chose it is because it is broad enough to allow me to have some sort of background in business, because I want to be a corporate lawyer, and work with mergers and acquisitions.
