I've done quite a few cosplays, both anime and j-rock.
My first ever cosplay was Makoto Kino from Sailormoon back in 1999. I had a Seimaden-cos planned, but I never finished it. In 2004 I started doing j-music-cosplay. I cosplayed ChachaMaru and Klaha on several occasions.
These last two years I did less cosplay but started to do my own designs, mostly EGA-style.
I somehow always had friends who cosplayed with me...I met most of them through anime-related forums.

I cosplayed last year as an EGL at an anime convention with friends and this year I'm doing a few - maybe a Wa-Loli, Yuri Sakazaki from KOF series and Mononoke Hime.
Are you planning to go to a convention and cosplay there?
My EGL costume last year cost me almost $100AUD for the materials (incl lace, accessories etc) and took me three afternoons to put together, and a few days to design.
I wouldn't do it if it wasn't worth it

cosplay gets addicting after a while,,
haha my first cosplay was death note
which i think is incredibly easy.
thinking of your own is fun, as well as challenging.
cosplaying your fav. anime/manga is the most fun since you know your characters well
but you just can't kill it.
haha(:

I agree ^ it is addicting. But it's so worth it and very fulfilling. You get approached by tons of photographers or random people who can identify your character. Either way if they don't know who you are you'll still get approached haha. As far as the weirdness goes, it's not really that bad, sure you may encounter a few rabid fans here and there but you learn to just let it go and have fun.
It was actually my friend who persuaded me to cosplay with her, I had more the reason to because I wanted to do everything with my best friend since I was going to move away. We're just really close like that, and sides' she likes anime and making clothes so it was just kind of fit together like a puzzle. & yes it is kind of expensive but we both work so it wasn't a big deal spending money little by little.
Try it, you'll love cosplaying, sure it may be hard in the making (there were several times when I wanted to just say I quit) but in the end, you'll be pleased. It's extremely fun!
