Please help me.
Well, there's nothing much you guys CAN do but... I really need your two cents.

First, just for the record, I want to say that I am guilty. I'm going to try to fight it or anything. I know what I did was wrong, but it's scary as hell.

Well, tonight, my work ended at 10:30 while my brother's flight from Florida arrived at 9:45 p.m.

Okay, let's cut to the point.

So I was speeding because I didn't want my brother to wait for more than an hour (and that is the honest truth).
Well, while I was going on the ramp to the airport, a police car flashed his light at me so I pulled over.

He came out of his car and the first thing he said to me was, "you know I could arrest you right now." And I was like, "...really?" and he said, "yes. attempt of manslaughter." I WAS SOOOO SCARED!!! He asked for my license, car registration, and insurance. I gave it to him and he disappeared and when he came back, he handed me a citation ticket. While ripping it out, he said to me, "consider this your warning. We now got you on file so if you get caught one more time driving like this, we're going to arrest you on the spot."

Then I called my friend who used to be a drifter. He had his license taken away and all that peachy stuff. I asked him what the worst thing that can happen is and he said, "attempt of manslaughter will show up on your record."

This is my first citation EVER.
I never got a ticket in my life.
I was never under the watchful eye of any policeman and this is my first time being pulled over.
But... what good is it if the police officer is so strict? BTW- it wasn't a police car- it's the highway patrol.

I wanna tell you guys EVERYTHING in detail but you might get lost in the midst of it.
Anyways, that's just the general gist... and now, I can't stop crying my eyes out.

What's going to happen to me?
Please don't say I'm stupid for doing what I did.

Actually, say it. I deserve it.

But honestly, what are your intake on this?
What do you think will be my outcome? I got a warning... but... permanent record?

I'm REALLY scared right now.

Oh- and my parents are in Korea so they don't know about this. I will eventually tell them, once my head stops spinning.

---edit--

On the ticket, it says that I was going 84 mph on a 65 mph freeway. So that means I got caught on the freeway.

But I swear, I think the police was following me? Because I did weave, I won't deny that, but not to an extent where you can call it man slaughter...?
On the ticket, it also said that I was following too closely to a car and yadda yadda yadda.

I don't even know what my fee is. There's just a court date... and where to go. But the thing is, I can't even read his handwriting and I tried looking for the number in the back. Where can I find the phone number to contact a clerk so I can verify the date? I know the time is 8:00 a.m. but I don't know when and where...

--edit--
A lot of you guys are assuming that it's a speeding ticket, and that the officer was just trying to scare me. But the thing is: I have a set court date. There's nothing on the ticket about a fine arriving in the mail or anything like that. But then again, this is my first ticket so I don't know what a speeding ticket looks like ><;; but from how my mom describes it (I just told me parents a couple of minutes ago), and my friends describe it, I think I got a "special" ticket. Sorry if I sound so stupid and close minded, but I really don't wanna get my hopes up about it just being a speeding ticket. I have more than "speeding" written on my ticket, AND... the officer almost claimed me to jail. I think he changed his mind and gave me a "written warning" after seeing that I had a very clean record.

If he was trying to scare me, he did a very good job. A very, very, good job.

But on the ticket, he wrote that I was driving too closely to other cars, that I was weaving like no other (changing lanes excessively), and just driving wrecklessly. It wasn't just speeding.

Plus, when polices ticket people, do they usually ask for their insurance?

If he was just trying to scare me, then everything he said was unneccessary. Threatening to arrest me?
I don't know... I'm still really scared.

But your posts gave me comfort somewhat. I'd rather pay a hefty fine than anything else.

yes they ask u for insurance. it's illegal if u dont have insurance on yer car so yew have to prove it otherwise it's another fine. and probably some other penalties as well. i still think ti was a scare tactic :T

I think you need to try and analyze the ticket more carefully and see what infractions were checked off. Is the infraction just "speeding" or is it "reckless driving". I don't think it can be attempt of manslaughter unless you purposedly tried to hit somebody or run them off the road.

The fact the officer wrote down that you were weaving in and out and driving recklessly is not good. But I don't think you are too bad off. Try and fight it. Maybe the cop won't show up. Try and get a reduced sentence. Ask for the fine to be reduced. Say you are a poor student if you truly are.

Oh...and bottom line...try not to repeat what you did. If you simply left a half hour earlier or one hour earlier perhaps you wouldn't have to speed as you did. Good luck.

ask if he recalibrated his radar that day - if he didn't, your ticket is VOID.

otherwise, i suggest calming down - he just gave you a ticket and you'll probably pay a heavy fine, but i don't think attempt at manslaughter is going to go on your permanent record, especially if he said that it was a warning.

If you really ask this question, they must think your a complete moron.

For the original poster, cop was messing with you. Don't worry about it, it's just a simple speeding ticket...an infraction.

There's nothing on your record. You have to be arrested, taken to jail, processed and booked for anything to be on your record. This includes attempt manslaughter. If you were really arrested for manslaughter, you wouldn't be at home posting this and your buddies watching the incident on the local news. It's that serious.

It is not just a speeding ticket...speeding tickets don't have mandatory court dates...

^ exactly. I have a set court date (which I can't read, by the way because the officer has seriously bad penmanship, omfg). But yeah.

I've never gotten a ticket before, that's why I'm freaking out. I don't know what one looks like so I thought my ticket was a special one for especially bad drivers T.T Speeding tickets DON'T have the penalty fee written on it, right?

And sushiwhore- same with California. It gets "erased" after three years WITH traffic school.

But I think the highway patrols were trying to blend in. While I was speeding on the freeway, there were like, two or three other cars who were speeding with me. They were in front of me and weaving so I kind of "tagged" them. My friend asked me if I remember seeing a car weaving behind me and I said, "maybe". I really can't remember. But he said that if there was, then that was probably the highway patrol car trying to blend in, trying to find an easy target to ticket. And because I actually had to merge into the 405 from the 55, I guess they just followed me? Because I had to slow down to get on the merging bridge. Plus, that very bridge also led you directly to the John Wayne Airport.

The police that ticketed me was half caucasian and half Japanese (from what I remember). I knew he was mixed but didn't know it was with Japanese until I read his last name. My friend told me that Japanese-American officers are usually very strict and they're the ones who go strongly with the rule book. It's just a generalization, and even with one run-in, I'm starting to believe that stereotype (in my case, it's so legit).

And I don't think fighting the ticket is a good idea. The cop will definitely show. If his PARTNER was the one who ticketed me, then he probably wouldn't because the partner was really nice to me. I think he kind of actually felt bad? I have NO idea, but I get a better vibe off of him than the other officer. I'm not going to go up against the cop, because I admit that I was weaving somewhat and speeding- but I don't think I was changing lanes dangerously. But whatever, that's just me. I was the one behind the wheel so I had better control of my actions and I knew what I was doing. I guess from a third party view, it was seen as unsafe and "an attempt of manslaughter". whatever floats the officer's boat.

I was afraid of it showing my on record. The cop said that it would and if I got ticketed ONE MORE TIME, I would get arrested. If he was scaring me, then... threatening me like that is not the way to go. I hope he had a restful night because I sure didn't... He was really heartless...

How old are you? And where are you from? As I recall you dont have to go to court. You could just pay your fine or go to traffic school. If you are underaged, though, court is mandatory I think. Either way you're not going to jail or anything if caught again. I already have like 3 speeding tickets in my time driving 8yrs now. One time I was caught doing 101mph. I paid my $200 fine and went on with life.

Stinks like punani in here. Dont worry about it.

84 in a 65.... if there was a car infront of you, you could have said "I was trying to keep up with traffic." Also, we all know you were speeding, but you could have said... "I dont believe I was going that fast officer, say.... may I ask when's the last time your radar detector was serviced? You know, humans aren't perfect... so none of the machines we make has a 100% chance of being correct, 100% of the time." *SMILE. Also tell him/her you never had a ticket in the last 6 months (or your life) and tell him your sorry again.

This is what I did when I was doing around 60 on 25 mph local roads and the cop was like.... "ok, im going to let you go, stop speeding around my town son (I had PA plates, in bumble f**k MD)." All he did was check my license, registration and insurance. *shrugs, I had numerous encounters with the popo and they all let me go for some reason, I swear its my nerd glasses.

Stop speeding around......... emotional asian woman behind the wheel, scary thought. I wish there was a bumper sticker "Korean woman driver. Do not tailgate" for my mom. She's been in 4 accidents already, none her fault, but all could have been avoided.

When you're driving dont drive under unstable emotional states and put the dam phone down! Stop day dreaming, focus and concentrate on the road.

I'm 18 (turning 19 in September). I'm from Irvine, but I was on the 55/405 South when I got caught. I was driving home from work, which is Santa Ana (Disneyland) and on the ticket, it said that the place I was ticketed was in Santa Ana (when it was really Irvine -.-;; ). This isn't a speeding ticket though. That's what the officer told me. He put me down for wreckless driving... along with speeding. I don't know. If it was a speeding ticket, then I wouldn't have to go to court. I'd just have to pay a fine when it comes in the mail.

HAHA, your post made me laugh. Emotional Asian Woman, ey? I wasn't... emotional, per se. Actually, I was just in a hurry :X I have a very... uh... hurried personality? I don't know. But yeah, my officer won't let me off the hook. I was really polite with him but he just eyeballed me down and would look at me with disgust or something. When he walked back to my car, he had my license in his hand in a position where it looked like he was handing it to me. So I reached for it but he snapped back and said with a HUGE attitude, "I'm not giving this back to you. What makes you think I'm gonna give it to you? Do you realize you can be arrested for manslaughter?" ... and yes, those were his exact words because I wanted to cry right then and there. I've never met a police officer that was so rude. And the only time I had an encounter with an officer was because SOMEONE else was breaking the law (someone broke into my car), and they were super duper nice. And police officers were nice to my mom when she got a ticket, too :/ I was sitting on the passenger seat xP haha.

And dude, what did you think I was doing? Day dreaming? I was so focused enough not to even ALMOST get in an accident, right? xP

YOU GUYS- I DON'T THINK IT'S JUST A SPEEDING TICKET... I HAVE TO APPEAR IN COURT.

Hmmm ... never heard of Attempted murder while speeding on the freeway ...

I know that if you kill someone in an accident by like DUI, you could get an involuntary manslaughter sentence ...

But by speeding? Never heard of it ....

Go to court ... ask about it .... and if it was a joke, that officer should get fired. phew.gif

Well... from the way you've described it, that's reckless driving which is an automatic court appearance... at least in S. Cali where you and I are from it is. It doesn't matter that it's your first or you've got a clean record. After a certain # of miles above the speed limit it becomes a mandatory court appearance which is where you'll find out what your fine is. Also I wouldn't bother fighting it... the cops usually do show up plus since you've got a "freebie" ticket [aka you can take traffic school and not have it show up in your record when insurance companies pull it up], it's better not to forfeit the right to take traffic school by trying to fight it in court.

Hmmm... must be different in N. Cali but down here, if you get pulled over doing 100+mph... then I'm relatively sure u're gonna say bye bye to your license for awhile. $200 is dirt cheap for doing more than 35mph over the speed limit.

at least it's not 20 over the speed limit. that could get you into serious trouble. he's kind enough to put 1 mph lower for reckless endangerment.

in either case, you've been scared nicely... take it easy.
