it's definitely not too early to be picking out ur colleges if ur a junior > senior. evn if ur just an incoming junior in the fall, it's still good to have a head start. you should begin to compile a list of colleges ur interested in and research them online. do they have what you want to study? how strong are they in the program/area of study you want to pursue?

location might also be a factor in what colleges you decide on. although you know you want to be in NY or MA for college, the surrounding areas could be totally different in diff parts of the state. for example, amherst is all the way in western MA, which is ~2 hrs frm boston. wellesley on the other hand, is about 40 mins frm the city in a gorgeous neighborhood but with limited transportation into the city, while tufts is just outside the city, but in a so/so neighborhood. try visiting the schools after you've come up with ur list and then you can cross some off and keep the ones you definitely like.

some colleges in MA you could consider...
williams college
smith college
mount holyoke college
boston college
wheaton college

Woot, Boston! ;]
I actually have one friend who went to Wellesley and one friend that went to Tufts... For Wellesley, it's a BEAUTIFUL campus, and since it's an all girls school, you get reaaaaaaaal cozy with all the girls in your dorm building, classes, etc. And Tufts, they have great scholarship programs, so if you need money for college, you should apply to a lot of the financial aid and scholarship programs. Tufts has pretty good food too. They're both really good liberal arts schools. Also if you like having a lot of Asians, Tufts is your place... There's SO MANY Asians- especially Koreans.

Don't worry. You're not wierd... I'd be dying if I was an upcoming junior.

seniors '11
let's do it.

One of my friend is going to Amherst College with a full ride.
He chose Amherst over UCB, UCLA, and some other nice schools.
Therefore, I'm guessing Amherst must be pretty nice to get his attention.
just love.

One of my BFFs goes to Barnard College. She was ranked #1 in our school and chose Barnard over NYU and University of Chicago.

Do you know what you want to do in terms of career/goals or have a general idea (engineering, business, IT, law etc)? Your decision should be based on the program you would like to get into and the atmosphere.

You might also want to look at Haverford and Swarthmore (near Philadelphia), Wesleyan (Connecticut), Vassar, Hamilton and Colgate (which are all upstate NY).

Unless it's something like engineering or IT (which I'm really doubting if she's looking at liberal arts schools), then I don't think it's really important to think about a prospective major or career. I do think the atmosphere is important, which is why it's always a good idea to do an overnight visit at a school you're seriously considering.
