i have never bake a cake before so i'm quite confused on how to make the frosting...
what are the things to add? can i just use baking chocolate, melt it, spread them on the cake then chill it to let it harden?
i seen quite a few recipe which requires cocoa powder, butter, cream etc... is it a must to use them?

there are different types of frosting. the most common one is a buttercream. i know a lot of asian bakeries like using whipped cream because it isn't as sweet or rich.

It depends on what kind of flavor you're going for. If you want it to be sweet, then you would use regular sweet (usually buttercream) frosting. For Asian styled cakes, you would most likely use saeng cream. To make that, you use heavy cream and sugar.
But if you're going for the sweeter taste, you might just want to buy the frosting that's sold in plastic jars at grocery stores.
I wouldn't recommend melting baking chocolate and using that as frosting. It'll harden into a shell and not stay soft.
