Summary for June week 3 chart:

No. 1 song: As expected, Yangpa has the new No. 1 song with "사랑...그게 뭔데" (Love…What Is That?). She edged out SG Wannabe’s “한여름날의꿈” (One Summer Dream) by 15 points. Yangpa has enjoyed a very successful comeback after a layoff of 6 years, capped by this No. 1 song and her top-selling album “Windows of My Soul”.

Biggest Mover of the week: A surprise song is our biggest mover – Banana Girl’s (feat. Lee Hyun Ji)’s 쵸콜렛 (Chocolate). As I mentioned last week, Banana Girl is a project album of dance music that features a different female singer each time. Lee Yeon Ji is featured on this song. A bevy of female stars - Kan Mi Youn, Star, Bae Sul Gi, Solbi (Typhoon), Hanna and Son Myung Eun - appears in the music video, upping the merriment in general.

Hot shot debut: Dynamic Duo (feat. Naul)’s “출첵” (Attendance Checkup) is our highest debut this week at No. 27. Dynamic Duo has the top-selling album in Korea now. This hip-hop duo also has their mainstream breakthrough on their last album, like Lee Ssang. Their music is more hard core hip-hop. This song is going to move up a lot next week when the album sales score kicks in. The music video spoofs various TV programs, adding to the fun of the story.

New songs: We have 6 new songs and 2 re-entries this week.

Songs to watch out:

4. See Ya - 사랑의인사 (Love Greeting) – This song is moving up quickly on the chart, up 12 spots to No. 4. It is not surprising as all but one of See Ya’s singles have reached the top 5. With their success, I think See Ya has become the top female group in Korea now. This is definitely a potential No. 1 song.

14. Hyun Young - 연애혁명 (Love Revolution) - Hyun Young returns to the top 20 with a re-make of popular Japanese group Morning Musume's “Love Revolution21”. Hyun Young’s last hit “Noona’s Dream” was also a re-make so it is not surprising to see her doing it again.

32. Goodbye Sadness - 오죽했으면 (How desperate) – moved up steadily (9 spots) in its 2nd week on the chart. This singer with a husky voice has gained popularity with this song which has received strong airplay and is doing well on internet charts, even though he has not performed this song on TV shows. The music video, starring Jung Il Woo and Paik Sung Hyun, is about a man betraying a friend to seek revenge for his father's death. Jung Il Woo exudes charisma in his role.

45. DBSG -하루달 (Air City OST) (Day Moon) – title song from the mega MBC weekend drama starring Lee Jung Jae and Choi Ji Woo. The drama rating is disappointing, but the OST features many SM Entertainment artists. DBSG sang this title song. Unlike other DBSG hits, don’t expect this song to go too high on the chart unless they are coming out to perform (which it won’t happen). The scores are purely based on album sales.

BIOGRAPHY:

Our featured artiste this week is Lexy. She is known as "The First Lady of YG Entertainment". Lexy started out as a pure rapper, and she was in training for 5 years at YG. Before her solo debut, she was featured in YG Family's 1st and 2nd albums and performed on stage with other well known YG artistes. At that time, YG artistes were male-dominated and she was the first major female project of the record company, thus becoming YG's First Lady. With her good looks and excellent rapping skills, she caught attention of many fans. Her solo debut was highly antipicated.

At the end of 2003, Lexy finally debuted with her first solo album "Lexury". To many fans' surprise, Lexy debuted as a singer rather than a rapper. YG's strategy was to introduce Lexy to the mainstream audience, and it's more appealing if she's a singer. Lexy did not disappoint fans. With the help of well known rapper and songwriter Psy, her first hit "New Kid" topped the music chart at the end of 2003. Her follow-up song "Let Me Dance" was also a top 10 hit. Lexy also won new artistes awards at several year-end ceremonies that year.

In the summer of 2005, Lexy released her 2nd album "Lextacy". Many fans believed that she would rise to become one of the top female artistes in Korea with this release. However, her comeback was derailed by an unfortunate incident - on her comeback show at MBC's "Music Camp", members of an underground group Rux exposed their genitals on stage and the show was immediately cancelled. Lexy was visibly upset and depressed about the incident, and she cut short her stage performances on this album. Even so, the title song "Wipe My Tears and Put on Makeup" still went to No. 2 on the chart without much publicity.

After 2 years of regrouping, Lexy is coming back with her 3rd album "Rush" in 2007. This time she finally goes back to her hip-hop roots, which means more rapping and less singing. The title song "Up To The Sky" reached No. 1 on our chart, and the album sales are also decent. Lexy has finally re-captured her glory from the 1st album and more.

Even though YG Entertainment has debuted many female artistes and groups now, few have enjoyed the success that Lexy is having. An interesting fact is that most YG artistes are doing better on album sales than songs on the chart, but Lexy is the opposite. While her album sales are respectable, her title songs have always been in the top 3 in music charts. It shows that Lexy's fanbase is very diverse. She has now established herself and is going back to her style of music. For sure, she will further expand her fanbase.

J has returned back to us with her very own digital single! J is well known for her soft, yet soulful vocals and has finally returned after a long absence from the music entertainment. The main title song is "With Tears", which is a wonderful duet featuring Lee Jung. This song was composed by Han Sang Won, who has composed hit songs for SS501 (4chance), Kara (Break It), Jang Woo Hyuk (Let's Go), Bada (V.I.P.), etc. This song has a smooth melody and is sung with J's soft and affectionate voice. It is about someone having to forget another person through tears. The sub-title song is "Time... Makes Everything Die Out" which is another great song with an R&B rhythm and minor melody.
