what kind of laptops do you recommend for a college student? i was thinking about the new hp tx 1110us notebook but i've heard that a common problem with hp notebooks is that the screen just goes out at times, so the notebook has to be connected to a monitor occasionally. are tablet pcs really a plus when in college? please help!!

Macbooks are great! BUT!!!!!! If you're majoring in something that's related to coding in VB or intense use of Microsoft applications, I suggest Lenovo (Used to be IBM) thinkpads (T61). Yeah Dell's way cheaper, but I'd rather pay a few hundred bucks now for reliability than having to replace it within two years.

^ yeah the leopard's supposed to roll out during the fall.... but you can always buy the operating system separately. More than likely your college will offer some sort of a student discount price on the OS.

The thing I'm looking forward to in the new OS is the bootcamp that allows macs to run both the MAC OS & Windows OS.

From my experience, Macs have been very very reliable.... Rarely crashed.

Yep. In fact I'm using mine right now! I love it.

A lot of people bash dell laptops (I have no idea why) but don't listen to them. They're fine. They work great.

Macbooks are all the rage but really choose the most efficient one, not the most popular one.

You should consider the mobility factor when buying a laptop, but this depends how often you like bringing your laptop around, because most people find it unnecessary to bring a laptop to class. I use a HP Pavilion dv6000z... it's a 15.4" ... it's a really good laptop, the con is that it runs on Vista which takes up a majority of both cores.

if you want to use it for notetaking (i.e. checking your email during class) then look for weight, size, and battery life. Weight and size are obvious, as you don't want to be lugging around a ton of bricks in your backpack nor do you want to want to carry around a mobile desk. And since everyone somehow seems to think it's so necessary to have their laptop during class, finding an outlet will be tough making a good battery that can go the distance more essential.

but if you're going to leave it at the dorm or the apartment, then bring whatever you want. Probably the best laptop available since you'll be able to use it for all four years.
Don't forget that most universities have great discounts for students, up to 20-40% or some such figure.

tablet pc's are the most ridiculous thing ever.

i agree with most of what he said...it really depends on what kind of student you are...i picked a smaller laptop since i knew i would carry it around and then my dad made sure it had enough gigs for the hard drive and memory or whatever...
but i also got mine cuz i thought it was cute looking but im kinda superficial like that XD

The OS is supposed to come out during fall. Bootcamp's available now for free to download, but I think there's bugs that they need to kink out. There's another software that allows you to run windows also.

The lighter the better. For me, at least.. Because you have to lug it around with you... Extra kgs=strained shoulders.
I'm using the Dell XPS M1210. Performs well... It's great!
