Do you go to Cal Poly? Many companies like Disney and Panda Express work closely with the Collins school because they want the Collins graduates to work for them when they graduate.
Ok so I graduated last year with a Business Administration Degree (emphasis in Marketing) and have had some set backs so I am currently not working. I have an interview this Thursday (Oct 2) and I fear that they are going to ask me to market myself to them. Yes I know I am a marketing major but I just have the hardest time answering without it sounding so typical (ie hardworking, fast learner, etc...). So any suggestions on how to go about answering when the interviewer says "Market yourself to me."?
Yes, I'm going to Cal Poly next spring. I want to find a part time job related to my major too but the thing is I have no experience since most of what I got from college have nothing to do with my major.
Did your sister go to Cal Poly too? Did she find a job or how's she doing with the competitive pressure? I had 2 classes in college which were related a lil bit to my major, and there are many people who've worked for a long time in restaurants. They said that they want to have some kind of certification so they can have better salary. Most of my classmates aim at working for restaurants too, but since I don't really love food / cooking, I hope I can get a job in Hotel. But it seems too difficult, argg

Thats encouraging to hear cause I'm pretty darn depressed about having so much trouble finding a job. Congrats on your new employment!

Yes my sister goes to Cal Poly too, she hasn't graduated yet. Well if you make a good impression with your professors they will help you out when you graduate because one of my sisters professors is a a hiring manager at Disney and she told my sister that when she graduates she would help her get a job with Disney is she wanted to work there. If you want to work in hotel and not restaurant I suggest you get a hotel job now, do something like front desk receptionist. You should try the all of the hotels on Huntington in Arcadia one of them is bound to be hiring. I know that the Mariott Suites was looking for a front desk person a couple of weeks back, don't know if they still are though.

The problem is that there are not a lot of women in the construction/engineering field and I know I'll probably get harassed and I'll have to work 150% harder than men. Plus I have to go back and do an additional 4 years of Undergrad education in construction management.
I don't know what to do. I've made so many stupid mistakes in the past that I want to take the time to think over this career.
Anyone in this field or know anything about this field?

...sorry, but I don't think so. Anything without a written contract...isn't a good idea.
Lesson learned for him, 2 weeks ain't that bad.

Well I'm PteB Lew in the Canadian Forces, been in around a year and I'm loving it.
You all see those commercials for Fight Distress, Fight Chaos, Fight with the Canadian Forces? Looks pretty cool eh?
It is and it isn't. You have to go through a lot of stuff before you even get to handle weapons, do field work etc. But I've gone through my Basic Soldiers Qualification and my Soldiers Qualification and now my 3s (your specific trade job).
If you've ever considered looking at the Forces for a job, perhaps I can be of assistance. I'll try and answer as much as I can.
Remember, there is over 100+ trades to choose from almost anything everyone wants to do. Also you can be a Non Commission member (Private, Corporal etc) or an Officer (Lieutenant, Captain etc.) Officer trades typically require a degree of some sort, or high-marks in HS/college to get entry into RMC where you get paid to go to school for your degree!
Again, please direct your questions to my PM box, as I come on seldom. Or find me in the IRC channel under the nick jmlz87.
Peace~

I've had a lot of friends finding jobs just because they had contacts within a company.
One of my acquaintance was so bad at school and had NO experience whatsoever, he somehow landed a job as a database administrator. I recently learned he knew 1-2 contacts within the company that made him join so easily.
On a sidenote, I have an interview tomorrow at EA games, we'll see how it goes

I mean, once my classmate told me about how he put his dad's number into the fake information about work experience, then the company called his dad and of course he praised his son and my friend got a job later. I asked my other friends about it and one tells me that the company will use your SN to check but if that's the case, then how did my friend get a job? (It's a part time job).

I find that the environment of a restaurant is heavily dependent on the management, of course this is the case with any workplace but it seems to be more emphasized in a restaurant. That and how busy the place is. But overall, I like it. I find that the staff tends to be very close to one another and you can make some really great friends. I've been a busser, hostess and server. I liked serving the most because of the tips and even though you get crappy customers, you get some really great ones too. It requires you to move fast and think on your feet. Bussing is physical, be strong and move fast. I didn't like hostessing much at all. They don't get much tips at all (I could make it one shift of serving) and I find it quite boring. But then again, I hate to just stand on one spot.

most companies will call your references and leave it at that. some companies wont even go that far. while other companies [especially those involving military/defense] will go through your entire record and then some. but it's safe to say most companies will call one or two of your references at best. if your references pick up and do what they're supposed to do, then ur in the clear.
