Hong Kong director Stanley Tong is planning a film titled "Diary", about the 1937 Nanjing Massacre during World War Two.

The director shed light on the plan while attending the opening ceremony of a bar in Shanghai on Friday.

Tong said he had spent four years collecting information before writing the script. So far, films delving into the massacre are not historically accurate, and this motivated Tong's decision. The director plans to focus on the emotions of those involved.

Cast members selection is underway, and Tong failed to reach an agreement with popular Hong Kong actress Maggie Cheung. Hollywood will provide foreign actors, according to the director.

Shooting is expected to start in September in China, Japan, America and Europe. It is estimated to cost 250 million HK dollars for war scenes and computer effects.

Wow, I hope that this film will do history justice... sort of like Shindler's List. So this film will be a Hollywood/China/Japan colaboration?

At the contrary, I hope it will be a real movie, and not an historical course. I want something subjective, like Jang Sun-Woo's A petal about Kwangju riots.
History justice is not for films, there are more appropriate media for this.

But I'm going to hang myself, because as it starts it will definitly be a big holywood-like historical course. crazy.gif

i kindda feel uncomfortable about this.. cos.. it's seriously very horrifying. If this show is released, would the relationship between chinese and japanese go bad?
Reading the history of it.. just saddens me..

Relationship between China and Japan are already bad (even more than relationship between Korea and Japan) and, even if they don't really make efforts, it's not most Chinese responsability.
If you have some Chinese friends ask them (maybe not the young, but the olders), I don't think they like the Japanese a lot - not really because of what they did (afterall it's history) but because they still don't admit it (Nankin massacre, biological weapons tests and so on...)

Edit : by the way, if the movie is a coproduction between China and Japan, it might mean some Japaneses are OK wink.gif

It wont exactly be the feel good movie of the year will it? At least it'll bring attention to a horrible thing. It will though add fuel to an already strongly burning fire.

i'm a little scared to watch this....but also i'm glad that someone has the guts to write and direct a movie about this....

i'm thinking along the lines of "hotel rhwanda" and "blood diamond" type of things....but i'm glad that someone's stepping up to this.
sometimes...things change

Honestly, my first question was. Why was that picture in particular chosen to be put on the post?

As for the film, I remember watching one when i was like 7. It was the most horrifying film i watched in my childhood. I still remember hiding behind my dad when the Japanese soldiers came with their gas tanks to question this Chinese family escaping. The white lady was so nice and helped a lot of refugees.

Don't know about this one. I hope it's not another big dollar disappointment.

party pooper me, I have little respect and confidence in Stanley Tong the director delivering such a heavy subject and doing it justice. In his extended list of works, most ar lousy to me and his best works have only been action vehicles. geez I really hope he is serious with this instead of just doing something gimmicky and commercial.
