I'm in Taiwan right now and the cell I brought with me is locked to tmobile so it doesn't work with their sim card. I've asked around the area going to different cell phone company stores and none of them seem to know what "unlocked" means.
I really want to buy a new cellphone to take back to the states, so if I want to get it unlocked, would I have to get it unlocked here or get it done in the US? Or are phones outside the US generally unlocked?
Any advice? or has anyone bought a phone in taiwan and taken it back to the states before?

usually in taiwan there phones are all unlocked because they come sim free unless its a contract phone =)

Hahaha I had the same-ish question except not Taiwan, China.
But anyway, I think you just have to make sure the phone is triband... I'm not sure about the unlocking part. No one in China knows what unlocked means either.

^ yea I know about the triband part since the US uses a different one than Taiwan... So I'm guessing it's like what Chouchou said since none of the phones I've seen are branded by the phone companies either.
