College Essay Length How long does it have to be?

The requirements for an essay varies based on what your instructor prefers. Some teachers prefer MLA format, while others require ALA. Some just don't care.
The major themes of requirements in essays are usually the following:
1) 12-point font, double spaced, 1-inch margins
2) Cite your sources (NO PLAIGARISM - as usual, of course)
MLA and ALA formats can be found anywhere, and English courses will generally make you buy a book that describes this information in detail; so if you don't know what MLA or ALA is, you'll be fine. =)
As far as length goes, that will also vary based on what the topic is, and who your instructor is. Some papers range from four to six pages, and some can reach up to ten. The longest that I've ever had to write was twelve. Nicer instructors may even ask for just a single page, although those are usually restricted to easier topics.
As you get into big universities that have classrooms of 300-500 people, the page limit turns from a minimum into a maximum. Although the teacher is probably not the one that's going to grade your essay (that's usually left to TA's), they still require that your pages only be so long. A maximum is usually around four pages, and may be less if you've got more and more students in your class.
You should be wary of page length; just because it's long, that doesn't mean it's hard. Some topics may be very detailed on your part, and the hardest thing is actually scrunching the information into a decent amount of pages.
Hope that helps!

wait, are you talking about a college app essay or some essay that your prof in college gave you?
if its the former, then just look at the essay prompt. its different for each school (with the exception of schools that use the common app)
if its the latter, The Jin explained it quite nicely.
