i had an old emachines that blew the mobo. so i built a new one. well, i thought i would be able to get all my old files ported right onto the new machine. but it wont work b/c it was a propreitary xp disk. it wont install on my new machine. so i hooked up the emachines hard drive and my new xp64 hard drive to the new machine and tried to copy and open the old files. but it was all a .dat file and would not change the read only attributes. help, please.

are you sure you're viewing the correct partition? I guess that one might be the recovery partition... what a strange problem, provide more details about the hardrive setup pls.

yeah, theres only one partition on each drive. the internal drive is a 20gb wd 7200rpm with xp64 and an asus p5n23esli acpi 0602 bios. now i dont have the old HD hooked up, right now. but i copied everything from it. onto my other hd. my other hd is a wd external 250gb usb. again, only 1 partition. now the old hard drive had one partition with xp home on it. it was an emachines with a recovery disk. but it only works on the old emachines. and when i use that hd to boot on the new machine, it just says windows has changed hardware and it wont boot. i could probably find the cab files on the old disk and try that. but i doubt that it would work, either. anyways. this is a pain in the butt. thanks, for your help, so far.

Have you pulled out those jumpers from the pins? Change your jumpers accordingly and you'll overcome your problem.
I don't like you! >_<

was it encrypted at all (I really don't want to think that it was), maybe try to get some recovery software to see if you can grab stuff out of the hardrive, I dunno what the jumpers would do, cuz it should be on "auto" by default...

Yeah, set your new XP 64 harddrive as master and set your emachines harddrive as the slave. Then you'll be able to transfer files between them.

HAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!! the IRONY of the whole damn thing!!!!! the machine CRAPPED OUT ON ME!!!!! it had nothing to do with this. i was just playing cod2 and it restarts. figured it got hot, so i opened it up and the cpu fan wasnt blowing!! i wonder how long it was like that. i just spent $1500 building it 3 months ago. its wierd, though. the dvd ram spins and stops a few and spins. i plugged the fan into a new slot and it works. the mouse is usb and doesnt work in any slot. the external drive works in all of the usb slots. BUT the mouse from my imac works, too. the keyboard isnt usb and doesnt come on. neither does the one from my imac. the monitor just does its self test and thats it. it says its fine. so, i dont know what the hell is going on. the only thing i can think of is the cpu got fried, with part of the mobo!! im gonna cry, well, maybe not that, but im definitely gonna throw a hissy fit. l8r.

sounds like your cpu is dead. the cdrom reading and stopping is just part of power on cycle. i believe, your hard drives should be doing that too. i would try to contact the cpu manufacturer and see if they will replace it under warranty. though they probably would be able to tell that it overheated, but it is worth a shot.

yeah, i was thinking the same thing. i was gonna try my mobo company first. since it WAS the power conncetor on the mobo to the cpu fan that went out. i think they should replace my mobo AND cpu. we'll see how far i get with that though. as a last resort ill hit up my cpu company. first though, im gonna take it to the shop for inscpection. get my duckies in a row. btw, thanks to everyone for their input, so far.

Heavy gaming ill assume your psu blew or your motherboard crapped out on you. Most of the time the CPU itself and the other hardware survives fine though.
