So I am starting my college life at UCSD in a few months and I want to continue playing in band because I have been doing so for a long long time... problem is, I'm not a music major! Soo all of you college people ^^ do you recommend it? Do you think I'll have enough time working, studying for school, and practicing for band?

i didn't attend UCSD. but i missed my band days in high school
and decided to take band in college as well. there should be different school bands you can join, including one geared toward non-music majors who just want to play for fun, or one geared toward non-music majors who might like to be a little more serious about it, or one geared toward music majors who of course take their stuff very seriously. (at least that's how it was at my school.)
i participated in the first type, which was only a once-a-week deal, so it didn't cut into my academics at all... but it also wasn't much fun either. i think the reason for that was that we all knew it was a pointless endeavor (the only "event" we'd have was a small recital at the end of the semester that no one attended), and there wasn't anyone involved who took it seriously, so enthusiasm was diminished... whereas in high school, we had concerts throughout the year and music festivals and competitions and stuff. i'm not saying that's how it will be for you, of course; just relating what i felt. i didn't repeat the course agin.

Wow. I go to UCSD and that's exactly how I felt when I was in our university's Wind Ensemble. Seriously the band is half old people who live in La Jolla that want to play music... There are a couple music majors (or brilliant non-majors) who are great but most of us just don't take it seriously enough - not even the conductor takes it seriously enough. I missed 3 or 4 out of the 10 rehearsals and I still got an A because I came to the dress rehearsal and the concert and I had some solos. Honestly UCSD is not known for music...
Oh I'm a science major and I don't minor in music but I still play in Wind Ensemble because it's become a sort of social gathering for me =___=lol

At Rutgers I played in the concert band without being a music major. If you're living on campus it definitely shouldn't be a problem. Don't know what the commuter experience is though.

i was thinking that it could be a great social gathering, too! but if the conductor isn't passionate about his pieces... O_O then it's really kinda pointless isn't it?
