My major is International Business, and I'm going to be a freshman this fall.
I'm going to test the waters and see if this is really what I want to do, because I'm sort of undecided. I chose to do Intl Business with a concentration in finance.

1. Does it really matter what language I choose to minor/major in?
I took French in high school, but I don't know if it's useful enough. Plus, if I had to pick a language, French isn't really at the top. I would want to take Japanese or Spanish (I figure Spanish is most useful?). Also, I know it depends on the job but roughly, how often would I be using a second language?

2. What are some types of jobs I can obtain with this major?

3. Any advice/helpful info?

Thanks biggrin.gif

French is still widely spoken in Africa, Vietnam, parts of the Caribbean and a few other places. Including obviously France smile.gif

Other good languages would be: Spanish or Mandarin, or if you already know those, German, Russian or Japanese.

But what really matters most of all when picking your language is what part of the world you think you might want to focus on. If you are interested in Africa, French and English are the languages to know. If you are interested in SE Asia, French and Mandarin are the languages to know. If Central/South America, you need Spanish and maybe Portuguese (if you are interested in Brazil). For Europe, French or German or Spanish or Italian, many Europeans speak multiple languages so it's hard to go wrong there.

How often you'd use it depends on the degree of contact you are expected to have with business units in other countries, obviously biggrin.gif
If you wind up doing a lot of marketing, the language skills will be very important, but if you wind up in the accounting department then maybe not so much (unless you're in auditing!).

Not sure about the job prospects, but globalization isn't about to stop any time soon so it should be fine.

Hmm when I started as a freshmen I also wanted to do international business... focus on Japan but after taking a few courses, I realize the business portion wasn't for me. sleep.gif" I'm still taking Japanese right now though. I like it.

I don't think it matters TOO much what language you go into because there will always be some sort of business to be done with those countries. I guess it's a matter of what countries you want to do business with.

Anyways, you're just going to be a freshmen, so you're right, test out the waters first and see how you like international business. Take some economics, globalization, and marketing courses =).

There are many jobs you can get with a business degree. It's really broad so think of what you want to focus on once you tried things out.
