A reach school is one where you basically fit the middle 50 percentile or lower of the entering freshman class.
For me it was one of those schools that would just be pleasing and fun to say I actually was able to get into (eg Georgetown, UChicago, Brown, UPenn, WUSTL)

But my counselor told me to apply to about 9-14ish
Here's what he told us:
Have at least 2 "backup school" in case you don't get anywhere. (For me, UCR or CSULB)
Have at least 2 "dream school" that you wish you can go to, but will be hard. (For example, Harvard or Yale)
Have at least 4 "goal school" that you think you can get into (For me, UCLA or UCI)
Sorry my example for backup school and goal school is all California, I don't think I'll go out of state and I don't really know any other colleges ;;
Also even though it's a lot of colleges make sure they're ones you actually would go to because, applications run about $60 each I think.

One in my hometown and would actually get in.
Another just half an hour away and could actually get in.
And then two I wasn't too sure of but really wanted to be in.
I got into them all. ;P

I think 2-3 safeties, 2-3 averages, and about 2-3 reach would be good. So around 6-9 ...

1 absolute safety, 1 pretty sure I can get it, but not secure enough as a safety ^^;, 6 matches/low reach LOL, 3 high reach/dream, and maybe harvard, which i have yet to decide whether it's worht the 65$ app. fee, since i'm already going for princeton and yale, which are slightly less over-rated than harvard.
Although my guidance counseler suggests only 6-7, but since money isn't a problem for me i'm going to apply to more lower reach schools where i have a >50% chance of getting accepted.

But when I apply, I want to apply to Georgetown early action, and hopefully not have to apply to any other schools because that is my definite #1 choice.
Then I just have to pay Georgetown's fee and nothing else... YAY! And I could get over with it all in December of my senior year rather than have to wait for the suspense in April. (But then if I get deferred.......... Oh I'm in a world of hurt...)
