Summary for July week 2 chart:

No. 1 song: See Ya's "사랑의인사" (Love Greeting) finally moves up to the top spot on its 4th try. This song is No. 1 on M!Countdown, total airplay, and overall internet rankings. It marks the second No. 1 song for See Ya. They also reached the top on their debut song "Scent of a Woman" last year.

Biggest Mover of the week: Tony An (feat. SAT)'s "Melody" had a nice rebound this week, moving up 15 spots to No. 12. The song was in the top 20 two weeks ago, but dropping last week. This week, the song was ranked in the top 10 in M!Countdown and it helped this big move.

Hot shot debut: MC The Max's "눈물" (Tears) debuted straight into the top 10 at No. 8. This is the follow up song to their No. 1 hit "가슴아 그만해" (My Heart Cannot Go On Like This Any Longer). The song is more up-tempo, perhaps the first non-rock ballad that the trio has promoted as a single. MC The Max has also released a re-packaged version of their 5th album named "Vol. 5 Part II" recently, and it certainly helps this song.

3. F.T Island - 사랑앓이 (Painful Love) - narrowly missed No. 2 and perhaps will challange See Ya for the top spot next week. These 5 teenagers are gaining popularity quickly, and they are impressive in their live performances. Looks like they are going to be one of the top new singers this year.

11. J (feat. Lee Jung) - 눈물로 (With tears) - moves up to the edge of the top 10. One of the best duets in a long time. J's smooth voice coupled with Lee Jung's strong vocal are making good chemistry to this song. In my opinion, this song is better than J's duet with Howl last year "Perhaps Love".

18. Youn Ha - 연애조건 (Love Term) - "Secret Number 486" is off the chart this week, but Youn Ha did not miss a beat as she immediately comes back with a follow up song. Unlike "Auditon" and "Secret Number 486", this song is of slower tempo, but Youn Ha continues to show a strong vocal. Like MC The Max, Youn Ha also released a re-packaged album recently that should help this song.

22. Kara - 맘에 들면 (If You Wanna) - It is pretty safe to say this song's popularity should exceed their debut song "Break It". Recently their 1st album also appears on the top 20 in Hanteo's weekly sales chart for the first time since its release a few months ago. Looks like fans prefer this song as well.

26. Brown Eyed Girls (feat. Lee Jae Hoon) - 오아시스 (Oasis) - BEG is back with a digital single, a summer style mid-tempo song as a tune up to their soon-to-be-released 2nd album. They got the perfect helper by featuring ex-Cool member Lee Jae Hoon, who had so many summer style hit songs in the past. BEG has a similar hit song "Hold The Line" last summer. Let see if this song will be as successful. The music video, shot in Jeju Island, shows the Brown Eyed Girls looking fresh and cool on a summer vacation.

32. Bobby Kim - 일년을 하루같이 (One Year One Day Together) - Featured on SBS drama "War of Money", one of the most successful mini-series this year. This song is from the 2nd OST - Vol. 1.5 (this drama has 2 OSTs). The song has gained its points on various internet rankings. With the drama reaching its final episodes, the song should move higher in the next few weeks.

33. Soulstar (feat. Baek Ji Young) - 우리가 이별할 때 (When we separate) - Another good duet on the chart. This digital single is a nice R&B ballad. Soulstar has been very underrated. Baek Ji Young's popularity should help them in gaining more recognition. Besides Baek Ji Young, Soulstar has also been performing this song with Lee Young Hyun (Big Mama), and with Lyn. Listeners can decide which version they like best.

34. MC Mong (feat. Kim Tae Woo) - So Fresh - we can call this digital single "I Love U Oh Thank U Part II" with the same lineup. This song is of faster beat, but still a hip-hop ballad. Kim Tae Woo is in the army now so he won't be able to perform with MC Mong. May be that's the reason we haven't seen MC Mong coming out to perform this song on gayo shows yet.

35. Kim Dong Wan - 손수건 (Handkerchief) - perhaps the debut song with the most potential of moving up despite its lower ranking this week. This is Shinhwa member Kim Dong Wan's solo debut. Like Hye Sung and Jun Jin, Dong Wan chooses a ballad as a title song for his solo debut. His album was just released last week and this song already made it to our chart. It should be in the top 10 pretty soon. The music video of this song was shot in Busan and stars Kang Sung-jin, Yoo Gun, Lim Sung-un and the artist himself. Dong Wan plays a bad cop who's mean but has a warm side.

50. Ri Ri Band - 슈퍼에갔어 (Went to the supermarket) - A recommended song. This new modern rock band is fronted by actress Chu So Young as lead singer. Korean fans are quite receptive to female fronted rock bands. Let see if they can make a name for themselves.

ARTISTE OF THE WEEK - Brown Eyes



Note: We have a very special artiste of the week this week. Brown Eyes has been disbanded since 2003, they recently released a best hit album with a song on our chart. This may be the only (and last) chance to feature them. Despite their brief existence, they are a legendary group in my opinion in that they revolutionalized today's Korean R&B ballads to a large extent. If you don't listen to k-pop until after they existed, be sure to check them out.

BIOGRAPHY:

Our featured artist this week is the now defunct R&B duo Brown Eyes. Their members were Yoon Gun and Naul, both very successful solo artists (Naul also in the group Brown Eyed Soul) today.

Brown Eyes debuted in 2001 as a faceless group, a concept that was very popular at the time. Their goal was to impress the audience with their music instead of their looks. In fact, Brown Eyes never appeared on any major gayo shows during their existence. But they were aided by mega production music videos. None of the MVs were bigger (nor had more impact) than their debut song "Already One Year" (Watch it here). The music video of this song starred Chinese actor Jang Jin and Korean actress Kim Hyun Joo. It was about the life of a boxer. Famous MV director Cha Eun Tak directed this clip. This MV was played over and over again in medias of various Asia countries. This song and this video has become a classic hit. In fact, a lot of people outside of Korea got interested in k-pop because of this song and this MV. "Already One Year" spent many many weeks in the top 10 and was popular for nearly half a year in 2001.

Using the same formula, their follow up hit "With Coffee" also had an exciting MV, starring actress Shim Min Ah (watch it here). "With Coffee" also landed in the top 10. At 2001 year end music award ceremonies, TV stations wanted to present Brown Eyes "best new artist award". But true to their word, the duo did not want to appear in public and thus did not accept the awards.

Brown Eyes came back at the end of 2002 with their 2nd album "Reason 4 Breathing", and sadly, that was also their last album. The title song "Little by Little" also made a record - it reached No. 1 on MBC's Music Camp without the artist come out to perform. TV stations are usually reluctant to handed out No. 1 song to artist who did not perform on their show. That was a first. This song's MV was also a continuation of the story from "Already One Year" (watch it here). Again, it received mass acceptance. By this time, photos of members Yoon Gun and Naul has "leaked" out, but still no one had seen them in public.

Both Brown Eyes albums sold well over 500,000 copies. Their album sales were still strong well after their hit songs. Their songs were also covered by different Chinese artists. Their style of mid-tempo R&B music were very listener friendly, that was one of the reasons that their albums were selling so well.

Fans were expecting Brown Eyes to produce many more hits. However, the duo broke up in 2003. Rumors had that they had contractual disputes with their record company. Yoon Gun became a solo artist and Naul formed a "spin-off" group Brown Eyed Soul. Naul later also released his own solo album, and was featured in other hip-hop artists' songs.

Even though Brown Eyes disbanded in 2003, it was not the end but only the beginning of many similar groups being formed. Directly related to this "brand name" are Brown Eyed Soul, and Brown Eyed Girls (BEG) - a 4-member girl group whom the record company recruited after Brown Eyes broke up. BEG were in training for 3 years before debuting in 2006.

When SG Wannabe debuted, some people labelled them as the new Brown Eyes because of their similar styles. Today, many R&B groups are formed singing mid-tempo ballads (Monday Kiz, V.O.S., M to M, See Ya, Gavy NJ, etc. to name a few that were more successful). Their styles are not exactly the same as Brown Eyes, but many of them got the inspirations from Brown Eyes.

The company has invested a lot of money to make this music video, which consists of three short episodes. This is also Shin Hyun Joon's comeback music video appearance after ten years. I've watched all versions of SoulStar live clips and IMO, Lee Young Hyun is the best versions even though Baek Ji Young is good too. ^^ Yeah, I agreed that they are really under-rated!
