My network functions properly when I use WiFi, I am not sure why, might be because I sent it up when it was using WiFi. However, right now I needed to transfer huge amounts of large files (basically backup of HD) but I want to switch it to a ethernet cable so that it is faster. However, once I did that, the network isn't recognized on the laptop anymore but it is still recognized on the main computer. Anyone know how to update it this on the laptop?

i could be wrong here, BUT:
how are you connecting the computers with the ethernet cable, is it like through a router or is the ethernet cable directly connecting the pc to the laptop.
IF the ethernet cable is directly connecting you may need something like a crossover cable. (it's my understanding that certain cables don't allow direct network connections.)
you also state that the network isn't recognized by the laptop. by this i'm guessing you mean that you get the green circled icon, and not the red circled one when you connect both computers?:

To be seen on one side but not the other, I will ask if you have any firewalls enabled.
If your workgroups are the same...
Personally I vote give windows file sharing the finger
http://download.yousendit.com/A9CAE0C1366265DB and use a free ftp server.

buy, use, or borrow a USB Datalink cable. It's USB 2.0, so it's probably as fast or faster then your ethernet connection when yransferring files.
here's the link to buy one http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...=usb%2bdatalink
You probably save a lot more time.
ethernet isn't very fast uless you have gigabit ethernet which i doubt you have since most wifi routor come with 100/10 ethernet connection not the faster 1000 Gb ethernet connection.
anyways, if you want to use ethernet to transfer files, but it's not working try another ether. cable, or plug your ether. cable to another port on your routor.
I think you can direct connect your computer to another computer without a routor, but im not sure how you do it. "ask a friend to help"
update your ether.card drivers.

might want to try changing the workgroup on each computer.
i actually had a similar issue but yours was already working before so i doubt this would fix it?
hkey_local_machine\system\currentcontrolset\control\lsa
change restrictanonymous to 0 if its at 1?
might want to try switching to simple file sharing too (folder options)?
