I plan on getting 2-3 letters of recommendation.. I'm not sure how much those help though.

as for the uc's, try to aim for at least 3.5, that's what they take into consideration, lower than that and you're risking a lot. for merced that may be okay though, i'm not 100% what their average gpa is 'cause I forgot. goodluck on retaking the sat, hopefully you reach your goal ^^; the research project stuff you do can sound really good if you make it sound good!
I'm planning on majoring in Japanese Language/Lit or Korean Language/Lit. I might do premed requirements while majoring in those toooo, but I'm not majoring in those for an easier chance to get in. Majoring in just straight up Biology, etc, would make it easier, but I love both of those languages

Just dominate those SAT II's, and if you keep up what you do. You will have no trouble being competitive for Ivy League admissions.

Anywho, I've been pretty desperate, because my grades are so awful... and I too come from a family with quite high expectations (being that all of my 4 siblings were accepted to UC's and are either 1) pharmacists or 2) still in graduate school
& I neeed heeeelp!
So here are my grades..
(Should I even bother posting freshman year?)
Grades: First Semester / Second Semester
Freshman
Spanish 1: B+ / A
World History Honors : A / A-
English 1 Honors: B+ / A
Biology 1: A / A
Algebra 2: B / B
Sophomore
Health (summer school): A
Spanish 2: A- / A-
AP European History: C / B (I got a 3 on the AP exam... LOL)
Chemistry P: C / C (I HATE YOU, CHEMISTRY... my "oh gosh i can't do science" epiphany)
Dance (PE credits so not counted toward GPA): A+ / A+
Trigonometry: D / Statistics: A (Trig/Stats is one year; 1st & 2nd semester, respectively)
English 2 Honors: A / A+
soooo my sophomore year's first semester GPA definitely took a plunge with a 2.91... weighted (you don't want to know my unweighted GPA...). I really did raise up my grades though by second semester (3.6) so now my Academic Weighted GPA is 3.26. AHHHH...
oh gosh. What are the chances of getting into a UC with a D?! Is it even possible?!
I can't believe I failed Trig, and by TWO PERCENT (should I talk about it in my personal statement?). Sadly, I'm retaking the course this year (as a junior), but fortunately(? in my perspective), I got "that" teacher who's known to be "the easiest A ever".. so I think my 2.91 GPA is guaranteed to change into a 3.4ish (replacing that D with an A).
(also, trig is definitely waaaaaaay easier the second time around)
I'm aiming for a 4.0 (WEIGHTED) GPA this year.
Junior Year Schedule
0. AP US History
1. English 3 Honors (which is now on a weighted scale! WOOT!)
2. Trigonometry (one semester)
3. Spanish 3
4. ASB/Leadership/Student Government
5. AP Psychology
6. AP Probability/Statistics
OH YEAH! 0-6, baby! Well, by second semester, it'll be 1-6 (I can't handle 0 period!!!).
Sooo I'm aiming for a B in APUSH, English, AP Psych, & AP Stats (I know I'll get an A in at least one of these bad boys though... cough, AP Psych <3).. and A's in Trigonometry (although these grade points are added to sophomore year), Spanish, & ASB... Thus leading to a weighted 4.0 GPA.
which, if I do get a 4.0 GPA this WHOLE year, my lame GPA would be up to... ([3.4+3.6+4.0+4.0]/4)=. 3.75!!! Pretty good in my opinion... (3.5+ is considered an honors student at my school & 3.75 is high honors).
Also, my officer positions are: Historian for Badminton Club, ICC Commissioner for Class of 2011, Public Relations Commissioner of ASB, and Chess Club president... mhmmm! Chess ftw.
The clubs I shalll be in this year: Kiwins, Key Club (member already), Marine Science (member), Comic Book Club (member), Mock Trial (member in 9th grade.. trying to get into it again), Vietnamese Club, Chess Club (member), Student Government (member), Class of 2011 (member), NHS, CSF (member), Badminton (member)
heh.. that's not too much.. right!? I guess I should be steady with my clubs
Also, I (along with my friend) run Pennies for Patients, Project Angel Tree, Red Ribbon Week/Blood Drive, Canned Food Drives, etc. at our school.
I'm so kewl(.. not really).
I'm quite the fan of community service
and this would prob affect things: I'm Asian (100% Vietnamese, loud & proud!).
Colleges I want to get into (ordered by how much I want to attend there):
UC Irvine (first choice!!!)
UC Santa Barbara (fell in love after OCL camp... if you were there this summer, holler!)
UC Davis
UC Merced
UC Riverside
I'm really rushing this, since I have to start/finish my AP Psychology project due today
What should I try doing? What SAT score should I aim for? etc. etc.
Sorry this was lengthy!!! BACK TO WORK NOW!

UCs don't take letters of rec. and berkeley is going to be hard for you to get in if you raise ur sat scores. and for ucsd google for their points spreadsheet cuz ucsd accepts ppl by a points system, so write ur app based on that

Chinese School on Saturday for 9 years
Viola- 5 years but quit once I got to high school, so it's probably not worth mentioning
LeadAmerica conference for medicine & healthcare- July 2009
School clubs
Badminton- 3 years- 1 year on freshman team, 2 years on JV
Cross Country- 2 years- 1 year on freshman, 1 year on JV; got injured so I had to quit
Yearbook- 4 years- 1 year editor position
School Newspaper- 1 year (just joined so I don't know if it's worth mentioning)
National Honor Society - 2 years
Spanish Honor Society - 3 years
Mu Alpha Theta (math honor society) - 3 years
Volunteering
Convalescent Center - about 30 hours
National Honors Society- 10 hours, probably not worth mentioning
Tutoring - about 40 hours
Planning on volunteering at an animal shelter in October but that's a bit late to make it onto my apps probably.. they only take volunteers who are 18 or older :/
Work
I've worked for my parents at our restaurant for about 40 weeks a year, 5 hours a week for the past 5 years..
It takes up a lot of my time which is my excuse for my lack of extracurricular activities.
Other
National Merit Semi-Finalist (Finalist standing isn't announced until February I think)
AP Scholar with Honors
Recommendations: I think they'll be average-good.. I'm not expecting anything SPECTACULAR though.
Essays: I'm pretty confident in my writing so I think this will either help or not affect me (hoping it won't hurt me.. haha)
Planning on majoring in psychology or economics (pretty certain on one of these two majors), and medical school after undergraduate.
Schools I'm interested in:
Northwestern University (probably ED)
University of Chicago
Vanderbilt University
Carnegie Mellon University
Wash U. in St. Louis
Carleton University
University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign
USC (not sure if I want to apply yet)
Would I have a good chance at making it into the above schools? I kind of find them fits, but I'm not sure if they'd be reaches :/
Also, would I have any chance at schools like Stanford, Columbia, Princeton, Duke, Amherst, or Swarthmore?
My lack in confidence is what is deterring me from applying to these schools currently :x
Help would be much appreciated, thanks!

How long you have played an instrument would not consider an EC if you didn't join anything i.e. A symphonic orchestra or something. Your CM merits will be considered on"certificates" or rewards or something on the Application. Your school EC's are great though, and volunteer work is pretty sturdy
Just work to boost up those SAT scores and SAT II's and you'll be good with getting into a lot of the schools. I think the UC's are a given though. When your SAT''s are 2000+ or 2200+ you'll be okay with the Ivies and Stanford and such.
btw take the Jan SAT's I! Study hard!

Hahah the main reason I did badly on the PSAT's was because I didn't take it seriously and study or anything... but ever since then I've started studying, I'm definitely planning on taking the SAT I early next year.
So playing the piano wouldn't even count as an EC? Even if I have a teacher who can write my a letter of recommendation or anything? Oh and I played at some recitals too... but that would probably just count under awards too huh. D:
...hopefully I can join jazz band or something at my school, hopefully it is not too late..

O, goshness >_< I feel so late for doing this since I'm (gasp) a senior right now doing my apps already. I want an outside opinion that's not my friends (They totally think I can make any college I apply for some odd reason) or my parents' (they think opposite).

I think you have a great shot at all the schools you are interested in!
I definitely thought all the schools I applied to were a long shot also, so I know how you feel
Aim to get straight A's during senior year. It might've been a good idea to take AP Bio if you're interested in bioengineering, but it's no biggie.
I see that you're interested in Claremont McKenna College. Have you looked into any other LACs? It seems like a lot of the schools on your list are big-name institutions, so maybe there are some lesser known schools out there that are more fit to your taste.
It will probably be a good idea to re-take the SAT and try to improve your math score next time unless you do really well on the ACT
Oh and one last note, but it's always a good idea to keep in touch with the teachers you're closest to so it doesn't seem like you're using them just for their rec letters. Oh and also, I would recommend you either ask teachers that know you best, or teachers that taught a subject you're interested in majoring in.
