Summary for July week 3 chart:

No. 1 song: New boy band F.T Island scored their first No. 1 song with their debut hit "사랑앓이" (Painful Love). This song is also No. 1 on M!Countdown this week. F.T Island is the first boy band to hit No. 1 with their first ever song since DBSG's "Hug" a few years ago. It only takes them 4 weeks to reach the top spot, which is very impressive.

Biggest Mover of the week: MC Mong (feat. Kim Tae Woo)'s "So Fresh" moves up 14 spots to No. 20 this week despite not coming out to perform. As I mentioned last week, Kim Tae Woo is in the army so he will be unable to perform with MC Mong, but it doesn't seem to affect this song's popularity. MC Mong has collobrated with many ballad artists to produce hit songs over the last few years, and this is another one.

Hot shot debut: Rock band Nell has the highest debut this week with the song "It's okay" at No. 12. This song is coming from the band's re-arranged album "Let's Take A Walk". Nell has become one of the top selling rock band in Korea now with solid album sales on every release. Needless to say, this song's score are mostly coming from album sales. Like their previous singles, this is a mid-tempo rock song.

Songs to watch out:

11. Daylight - 머리를 자르고 (After Hair Cut) - moving up to the edge of the top 10 this week. It is one of the better ballads recently, written by Minuki, who has many hit songs in the past. Daylight is actively performing this song, hoping to push it to the top 10 next week.

16. Fly To The Sky - My Angel - just missed out as the hot shot debut, this song enters the chart at No. 16 this week. It is the title song from the duo's 7th album "No Limitation". Fans have high hopes on this album. With the good timing of this release, if the songs are doing well on the chart, it should be able to help F2TS to win many awards at year end. Next week, the album sales score kicks in, means that we should see this song in the top 10.

19. Brown Eyed Girls (feat. Lee Jae Hoon) - 오아시스 (Oasis) - surprisingly, this is the top airplay song in Korea last week (source from ChartKorea). There are no words yet whether BEG will come out to perform this song. If they do, it should do at least as well as "Hold the Line" last summer.

27. Kim Dong Wan - 손수건 (Handkerchief) - moving up slower than expected but should make a bigger jump next week with album sales score counted. Dong Wan is actively promoting this song on gayo shows as well.

31. Buzz - 사랑은 가슴이 시킨다 Part 2 (Love Is Controlled By The Heart Part 2) - perhaps the last song from this highly successful group in the past 2 years. Buzz has announced their breakup due to military services by members. We are hoping that they will re-unite some day. But fans should cherish this song. It is a digital single.

36. Superjunior - 행복 (Happiness) - a remake of H.O.T.'s hit. It's the tenth anniversary of the song. This song is recorded in SM Town's summer 2007 album. For the 2nd year in a row, Superjunior has been selected to carry the title song from the label's annual summer release (last year it was "Dancing Out").

40. Typhoon - 그대만 (Just Then) - title song from the trio's 2nd album. The melody changed dramatically during the song, from slow to fast beat. Typhoon is trying to shake away images of 2nd Koyotae on this album. Female member Solbi is really popular these days appearing on a lot of shows. Their debut song "그래서…" (So) last year went to No. 2. Let see if they can duplicate this success.

BIOGRAPHY:

Our featured artist this week is Yang Pa. She's one of my favorite singers for a long time. Yang Pa (means Onion in Korea) debuted as a high school teenager back in 1996. She has such strong and smooth vocal skills that many people suprised that she's in her teens. In March 1997, her song "Ae Song Ee Ae Sa Rang" reached No. 1 on many music charts in Korea. A new star was born. At year end award ceremonies that year, Yangpa won may awards as "best new artist". Her record sales in 1997 were more than 800,000.

Yangpa released her 2nd album in 1998 and held her first concert. In the same year, she was admitted to the famous Berklee School of Music in Boston with a 4 year scholarship. On interview Yangpa said that studying aboard was her dream. However, she continued to sing for a year before enrollment. Yangpa released her 3rd album in June 1999. Within a month, it was sold 650,000 copies.

While studying aboard, Yangpa continued to released albums. At the end of 1999, Yangpa released her 3.5 album, a special album named "A Letter from Berklee". This album, in my opinion, is one of the very best ballad album by a Korean female artist ever. I am still listening to this album today. Even though she's away, she won the KBS Singer of the Year Award that year.

Yangpa then concentrated on her studies. Her 4th album wasn't released until March 2001. She was still studying at the time, but again it did not affect the popularity of her songs. Title song "On Special Night" went to the top 5 in music charts.

Many people thought that when Yangpa finished her studying, she would come back very soon as a full time singer. At that time, nobody expected that we had to wait 6 years for another new album from Yangpa. That was because she had a contract dispute with her old management company. While she's still under contract, she could not release any new albums. Even though she did appear on movie OSTs and collobration albums. Also, a best hit album was released in 2003 that included a collection of her biggest hits.

Fans were waiting and wondering when Yangpa would released a new album. It finally happened in May 2007 when Yangpa released her long awaited 5th album "Windows of My Soul". Over the years on her long hiatus, the k-pop music scene changed a lot. So many young new singers with good voices debuted. We were wondering how many fans still remembered Yangpa.

But that worry was erased in a hurry. Just a few days after release, her album has topped the sales chart and stayed there for many weeks. Even though the record sales were a lot lower than her hey days, still it was impressive for a singer who has not released a new album in 6 years to accomplish such good sales. Also, for the first time in 8 years, Yangpa is appearing on gayo shows to perform. Her song "사랑...그게 뭔데" (Love…What Is That?) was written by famous hit-maker Park Keun Tae. The song reached No. 1 on every charts in Korea for many weeks. It was just like the same good old days for Yangpa, even gaining more fans now than before. In just 2 months, her 6 years of frustration is gone. Yangpa is again one of the top female vocalists in Korea.

Through this new digital single, they'll show more of a variety and mature side to them. The title song "That day, I again..." is composed by Kim Hyung Suk and arranged by Rumble Fish themselves. The 1st Shop of Coffee Prince OST is a delightful mix of sounds and sentiments, ranging from electronic to mainstream K-pop. Newcomer group The Melody leaves a deep impression with their two songs, "Lalala, It's Love!" (Track 1) and Polly (Track 10), while As One offer the romantic White Love Story (Track 2). For some electropop, there's Humming Urban Stereo's "How About a Cup of Coffee?" (Track 3) and Casker's Mocha and Double Shot (Track 13). Rounding out the selections is indie guitar pop act Tearliner with Go Go Chan!! (Track 4) and "Ocean Trip" (Track 12). Including his 2.5 remake album that has been released back in 2004, JK Kim Dong Wook has released a total of five albums. JK Kim Dong Wook has a very unique voice that everyone can recognize. In most cases, when we think of JK Kim Dong Wook, we think about his low husky voice that blends well with sad ballad songs. However, for his 4th album, he will be singing a variety of songs from different music genres such as jazz, rock, hip-hop...etc. Talented musicians such as Leo Kekoa, Bobby Kim, Kang Hyun Jung, Suh Woo Young and Yoon Do Hyun have all contributed to this album. JK Kim Dong Wook debuted with his 1st album with great ballad songs. For his 2nd album, he challenged himself by singing more upbeat hip-hop songs.
