Okay, so everyone always says that car insurance for teenagers is really expensive. But how expensive is it, really? And does it drastically change once you're over 18 years old?

Can someone also explain how the whole insurance thing works? My friend told me once you get your license, you need insurane, even if you don't have a car. Is that true?

Sorry if I sound dumb. I just don't understand.

Once you get your license, you have to be insured to a family's car as the driver or as an occasional driver.

My grandma pays like $300 bi-annually, insured on a 2000 Honda Accord Sedan. While I pay like $488 bi-anually, insured on a 91 Nissan Stanza Sedan.

It does change a lot when you're turn 18 if you pretty much have a clean record ...

I'm insured with my grandpa's car ... 2000(?) Avalon .... it was either $700 or $900 for 6 months ... Not completely sure ...

But I do have a Student's Discount and I completed a Safety Program ...

I'm trying to find a good car right ... Something that's low on insurance. haha xD

Insurance for teenagers is expensive. It goes down at 18 at first. Then rates decrease drastically when you turn 25.
Clean records and lots of experience (how long you've been driving) can also decrease your payments.

You, as a person, don't need auto insurance. The car being driven does. It will usually have terms on who is covered by the insurance (i.e., who can drive it, and still have coverage), so if your parents want you to drive their car, they'll have to add your name to the policy/policies. The car will also have a primary driver, which will most likely be one of your parents if you're younger; this person is 'fully' covered by whatever insurance plan is on the car, and the secondary drivers may or may not be covered entirely by the same plan.

I'm 19 and I just got a new car and the insurance for it was ~$1700 for the whole year... Even though I got my license at 18, I only have 1 year of driving experience so it didn't really help. I heard it goes down a little when you're 21 with a clean record.

I don't know about you, but I'm not living off a 40-40 for my life.

The more driving experience you have the more it does go down (if ever so slightly). I've had my license since 18, insured and had a car by 19. I was with AAA California insurance and was my rate was $201 per month (calculated), with no coverage on the car, just liability. After a accident a few months later, the rate stayed (at fault accident, property damage $750+). I would've expected it to skyrocket, but oddly it didn't. It would've for sure if for the collision damage coverage on the car tongue.gif . Now i'm 22, accident free since, etc and roughly paying half of what I used to for insurance. Not bad..

yep, insurance for teenagers are extremely expensive.
so be careful on the road because once something happens, insurance goes up drastically.
my dad used to pay about $80 for his 2002 Nissan Xterra but once he added me we have to pay about $270 a MONTH.
and my car is only a `96 Lexus ES300.

It all depends on the company I think. When I was shopping around for car insurance, I think AAA required 3 years driving experience with a clean record for good driver discount...However, Farmers count your years of driving expierence just from when you're 16 (given you have a clean record). So, I've been driving for only 10 months, and when I turn 19 in 3 months, I'll have a good drivers discount on my rate. If I stuck with AAA, I would not have gotten it until i was about 21. Also, teengers' insurance rates are high until they are 22 years old because the age bracket we're classified in is up to 21. So, once you become 22, your rates go down significantly....something closer to what your parents are paying basically.

I've been driving since last September, so I've been driving for just over 10 months. I'm added onto the family policy under a 1993 Corolla wagon, and im paying about $700 per 6 months. Also, I drive an Acura TSX, and thats on the policy under my dad's name. It is $620 per 6 months for the TSX. Everything on our policy is 250/500/100 with a $500 deductible, so that brings up the rates a little. If the TSX was under my name, it would have been over $2600 per 6 months assuming I was 19 with a good driver discount.

Anyways, to finally answer your questions..lol. No, you don't need insurance just beucase you have your license. Only when you drive. Your rates don't change when you turn 18, depending on the insurance company, sometimes 19, but definitely 22 if you have a clean driving record.
