due to your motherboard, you need an AGP card. most new cards are PCI-express so watch out.

X1950XT is in that price range, one of the best DX9 cards out there. I currently have a 7600GT and I run CS:Source maxed/60+ frames with all settings on high and 2X AA @1680x1050 resolution.. and a 7600GT can be had for sub-$100. sleep.gif

Assuming you have the board for PCI-e
I am the minority here.

first of all , the 5000 series really sucks. If you are getting something equivelant then get the 9600XT, or 9800PRO/XT ( if it can still be found that is heh). I think you have a AGP slot so the highest you can get is the 7800 GS AGP or 1950pro(?) (correct me if im wrong people). Would be a lot better if you could post your system specs so we know how much power you have so that we dont recommend a card that gets bottlenecked

At that price range, an 8600gts is your best bet.

Any high DX9 card will do (Nvidia 7900 GTO, ATI X1950 etc.).

We all wear masks. Everyone, everyday... sometimes we wear them so much, we forget who we really are. And sometimes if we're lucky, someone comes along and shows us who we really want to be, who we should be.

Tumblrrr.

I recommend a 8800gts, they're decent cards for their price. Though they don't exactly fit in your budget. And you also never mentioned what currency you're talking about.

Anyway.. I have never heard of the 67xx geforce cards you're mentioning, but I'm assuming that they're from the Geforce 6 lines. I'd recommend against those graphics cards since you're getting a new computer and those graphics cards are only DX9. Getting something from the geforce 8 line would be your best bet unless you're considering ati radeon cards as well.

As for other specs, it really depends on the price range you're looking at for your computer. As for a processor, I'd advise you to pick up a intel core 2 quad q6600 processor. But if money isn't an object to you, the intel core 2 extreme qx6850 quad core would be hands down the best choice though it costs an upwards of $1000 (CDN dollars) for the processor alone. However if money is an issue, I'd encourage you to get either an Athlon X2 or Pentium Core Duo. And definitely definitely definitely.. stay away from the semprons and celerons! As for the hard drive, I guess it really depends on how much space you need, but I generally would recommend anything above 160gb because the price point is quite decent at the larger sizes. And don't cheap out on the power supply, that's one of the most important pieces of your computer. I'd get a minimum 400W power supply with at least +18A on the 12V rails, and make sure it's from a reliable company. As for ram, sound card, optical drives, I'm pretty sure you could think those up yourself.

Tell me if you need any more help.. smile.gif

Do not get anything but a e6600 right now.

You can overclock the e6600 to match the e6800 for a much lower price.

And no videocard in the $200 price range will ever be bottlenecked by the e6600 processor.
I don't like you! >_<

the e6600 is getting phased out. the new series are the 6550, 6750, and 6850. you can buy the e6750 for 225usd (on newegg) and IF you wanted to you could overclock the 6750 as well. i mean.. 2.66 is fast enough?

Well you could go Q6600.. it might run a little warm, but it's 4 cores for less than $300. And no Core2 cpu will 'bottleneck' any videocard at this point. 8600GTS is overpriced IMO, but it isn't that bad of a card. DX9 cards in the same price range give it a run for its money, but I suppose you pay the premium for having DX10. The new E6x50 cpus are.. mostly pointless, they're all just higher stock FSB and lower multipliers, making them harder to overclock unless you can unlock the multipliers. I mean you can get any, and I mean ANY C2D or C2Q up to FSB 333 which would put them at FSB 1333Mhz, but at a higher core speed than their E6x50 brethren.
Ex:
E6420 @333Mhz FSB (OC) 8x = 2.66Ghz
E6550 @333Mhz FSB (Stock) 7x = 2.33Ghz

So for less price, and a little work you can get more out of the older series of C2's.
I am the minority here.

reason why im going with the e6750 instead of the e6700 is because its cheaper by almost 100$
most retailers are still trying to sell off the older stuff at the same price...also i dont really oc, although from what ive read the e6750 can be overclocked up to almost 1 full ghz on stock heatsink and normal voltage

so ok back to topic ive decided to go with either the 7900gs oc at $100 or the 7950 gt at $150
if you guys can help me decide if the $50 is worth getting the higher card that would be helpful cuz its hard to find comparisons between both since the 7950gt being shown is the 512 and im trying to get the 256 and compare with the 7900gs 256
thanks again

It's probably just better to take a dive and go for a 320MB 8800GTS, you'll get more out of it than any 7950GT.

The 7950GT is good, but for future use. I think it'll be better to spend some extra money and go for the 8800GTS 320MB. You won't need to upgrade for a long while with that card unless you're one of those people that has to get something new every year.

i decided to get the 7900gs oc for $100 usd
i just think the 8800gts just costs too much for my needs and if i do need it within the next couple years im sure the price would have gone down greatly and yea, this fits my needs very well
thanks very much everyone for your input

Screw the DX9. Wait a few months and get a mid-range DX10 card, that way, you can somewhat futureproof it.

Midrange won't most likely be able to handle the eye candy that the higher end DX10 cards can. Especially by the time that DX10 is mandatory. So it's not exactly future-proofing.
