Dear Soompiers,

I truly apologize for the lateness of Round 3, however, due to the dwindling of participants, I have decided to boost this contest from Round 3 to Semi-Final Round. Top two of each group will advance to the final round. It seems that many of the participants are busy with their summer so I have decided to make this easier for all of us. I hope you all understand and continue tuning into Soompi Idol for the rest of the contest.

Furthermore, the dancing section of Soompi Idol has finished and its winners will be awarded the during the overall Awards Ceremony held on August 7th.

Technical Skills: 4; You have a very beautifully smooth vocal tone. Even though you lowered the pitch and the background vocals are distorted a little, I feel that your singing makes up for it. You sound quite confident and practiced; I like that you don’t try to overbear the song itself. I don’t have much to complain about, but one tip is to add a bit more expression, just a touch more passion into your singing.

Song Choice: 5; Your voice has a very good combination of flowing tone and a sweet, youthful feel, both of which fit this song well. Nice choice!

Overall Performance: 4.5; I really enjoyed this performance. It’s rare that I become newly interested in a BoA song. I’m looking forward to hearing more from you.

Technical Skills: 4; Your rap does seem to give off a certain expressiveness in this piece. The “yi tian” almost borderlines on too repetitive, but you manage to change things up well as the song progresses.

Song Choice: 3.5; Ah, a familiar tune – m-flo’s “Let Go”. While there was nothing terribly bad sticking out in your use of this song, it’s also just slightly forgetful – there’s a need for a greater sense of depth, a focus; something to anchor the song down.

Overall Performance: 4; Being part of the minority in this contest as a rapper, you’ve done an admirable job with an instrumental like this. Those who add originality to what was once a cover song definitely deserve some attention. This was a smooth and pleasant listen overall, but I’m confident that you can do better.



onigiri_kun - Yuki no Hana

Technical Skills: 4; When your voice wafted along wispily, almost to the point of fading away, I was worried at first; but then, I see that it’s part of your unique style in this song. The style is a bit bluesy, jazzy…definitely a strong point of yours. Even though your voice appears thin, it’s obvious that you have control over this song, especially toward the end.

Song Choice: 4; I happen to find your voice well suited for a song like this, overdone a song as it is. Despite that, the only disadvantage to picking Yuki no Hana is that most will be familiar with a more loud, belty style – I admit to wanting to hear a bit more power, against my will – although I know the style you’re trying for is different. Anyhow, it’s not a bad choice, but I also know there are songs even better suited to your singing.

Overall Performance: 4; Well done, and you managed to keep my attention throughout the song. We are at Round 3, after all, where things really start to get serious! If I may be honest, this piece may not be too memorable after it’s finished playing – I’d choose a song to show off more expressiveness and vocal dynamics next round.

Technical Skills: 4.5; Wow – you sound so at home singing in Korean, it’s hard to believe you’re not a native speaker. The beginning, when you launched into the verse – that made me sit up and pay attention right away. There’s a certain crisp clarity to your tone – very interest-stirring. Of course, the wonderful control and flawlessly smooth transitions from throat to head voice; I didn’t expect any less. Just to be super picky, which you probably don’t care for, the “growls” were ever slightly distracting – but then, that’s being super picky.

Song Choice: 5; You definitely know your strength in song styles, I believe. The smooth beat and soulful style suit you extremely well.

Overall Performance: 5; Excellent job overall. I believe you will do quite well this round.

I might as well explain myself here. I'm sorry I couldn't continue participating; I was having some computer troubles so I just tried wiping everything out and reinstalling Windows. Turned out my motherboard was dieing (at least that's the conclusion I came to) and it wouldn't even let me complete the installation. After that, I tried putting my hard drive into my dad's work pc and, lo, it worked perfectly. I threw my drive back into my comp and BOOM! The motherboard chose that EXACT second to completely go. So, in short, I was (and still am until my new hardware comes in) stuck without any way to record. I apologize again for anyone that might be left out of the final round or anything because this whole round had to be re-organized. I'll try to keep up with this thing and voting here on me padre's laptop. Peace!

AestheticMelody: Ok, personally, I don't think this was the best choice for your voice. You sound like you're not letting it go like I know you can. It's not that way through the whole song. Also, sometimes it sounds like you get a little tongue ties with the Japanese. You hit the high notes very well. I just wish you would've chosen something that showed off your voice a little more. (maybe I'm wrong though, since fantasiimaker liked it! ^___^)

mikez: Niiiice. First of all, major props for rapping in Chinese (although you probably speak it fluently?). I've tried singing in Chinese and PHEW! It is not easy! lol. Second, props for rapping AT ALL. I think it takes guts to just rap a song in a competition that's supposed to technically be singing (and most people don't consider rapping actual singing). I've heard you around and you're really good!

onigiri_kun: Haa, cute username! lol. Are you by any chance a Furuba fan? Or just an onigiri fan? Anyways, back to the important stuff. lol. Nice song choice! Your voice gave off a certain sadness that added to the personality you've given the song. Nice job on hitting the notes too~ Like fantasiimaker said though, it's kinda hard to not look at it and expect something powerful like Mika's, but you gave this song something special in my opinion that didn't need power like Mika's.

luvjunjin0819: Wow. Wow. Wow. Haha! Amazing! Can I assume we have a Kim Ji Eun fan here? I absolutely adore her voice and it's uniqueness. I would think it'd be hard to sing a song by someone with a voice like her, but you did it amazingly well. Power. Emotion. Control. What more could us soompiers ask for? That was really amazing. I was listening to onigiri_kun and I was like, I THINK THIS WILL BE WHO I'LL VOTE FOR.
The song was so soft and nice I guess, and I was just a big fan of that. Absolutely amazing.

AestheticMelody - ahh i always love your songs! such a flowing voice... starts off very strong... the verse was almost too low for you but i really like the tone in that part. frankly i don't think it's as good as your other songs, but still a good piece. i've never noticed it in your other songs but in this one i think actually sound alot like boa... i agree with fantisiimaker that it's missing a little passion but still very enjoyable

mikez - booo you did this song better than i could! but urs is an original lol... it reminds me of jay chou's song hero... or fearless... the one where he said "guo guo guo" many times... i know it's not really that important... your pronunciation was off in random places. for example the word heart when you said "wo de shing li". i like how the yi tian part flows so well into the next line but there was just 2 or 3 too many of them at a time =S... i don't know rap too well but i thought the emotion was good... could've been a little more dramatic... but it flowed well so the writing of it was great (i don't know enough mando to talk about the content but it flowed)

onigiri_kun - the emotion... wow... wonderful... however i think it might've taken a bit away from the enunciation of the words cause it was a bit mumbly... thoes high notes... hearing them i can feel so much emotion. i've never heard the original (only the ppl on soomp singing it) so i don't know what people are talking about with the belting... but it was wonderful the way you did it. i can see this in a drama lol. the beginning of the bridge is the only place that was lacking passion.

lovejunji0819 - your voice is so awesome! it can do so much stuff!! before the chorus was even reached i was really amazed at it's versitility... all the tones you can get.. all the dynamics... shows real control... the "you" of the "last forever with you" was really off to me... the mixing was awesome... you know your singing kicks ass... i don't have anything to say lol

Aesthetic Melody - Cute voice, I especially enjoyed the second half of the song. It was softer, but your voice was very pleasant to the ear. I think you had a good energy toward the beginning of the song, but lose it a little bit. Your voice is still very good though! I heard you run out of breath a few times but just listening to these words, I don't blame you xD The high notes were very pretty! Sounds like you get energy back by the end of the song~ Great!!

mikez - Whoa~ Can I just say I love the tone of your voice? I hear you fall a little off beat but at around 1:00, you get a REALLY nice flow going. I am a big fan of rapping and you are definitely talented at it! Ooo, it has English too... xD *Listening now* I think that is a really nice touch blending the two. Great job!!

Onigiri_kun - Very soothing, I remember listening to your clip in the last round... Sometimes I have a hard time understanding what language you are singing (Even though I know it's Japanese from the title) because some of your words seem muffled. Other than that, love your voice <3

Luvjunjin0819 - Love this song and love your version of it! I guess I don't have to tell you that you are very good, right? I love the little growling you add to it that's not in the original. Very good. Nuff said.

I don't think it was the right song choice. Your voice lacked the maturity, range, control and polish that could have matched BoA's performance. You do have a nice voice though, a bit child-ish that could benefit from vocal training to gain more support. In my opinion, at this point, your voice that could be used for cute and upbeat songs.

Your voice reminded me of old Ayumi Hamasaki songs where she was using a nasal vibrato to reach the highest notes. I think this song was a very bad choice. You barely reached the highest note right and you don't reach the lowest note at all. The whole performance was flat (a bit less in the bridge). You put a lot of effort into your vibrato and to providing a smooth voice tone but don't be afraid to put the extra effort to reach and embrace the notes right. I know you can do it.

A very unique nasal and clean tone that you wisely use good, fast and precise word pronunciation, without loosing intensity and emotion. You took the time into the recording and mixing and it shows. I'm just sad I can't listen to the whole song ;_; You got my vote. Bravo.

i dont understand... when has rap has anything to do with vocal range? i dont think you should say too easy or no challange to something you barely understand. even though it might sound easy to you, i suggest you try it- write your story and try to find your own emotion in your voice for your own song instead of redoing covers, its a whole different ball game. i might not be good but it took me 5 years to get what i have now, and its no breeze either
