Simple. + = up one gear - = down one gear. Obviously you cannot shift down or up a gear that doesn't exist... but it does come in handy when you need to downshift on the freeway (down one gear) to gain more passing power (or use to it keep the car from rolling too fast), or up one gear when you want to cruise and gain some economy on the freeway.

Downshifting to first gear can help when you need to decent a very steep hill or grade, using the engine compression to slow the car down.

It should be in your car's manual (important!). I don't have a tiptronic, but as far as what i've seen this seems to be correct.

When you're on drive, just "shift" or "move" it over to the tiptronic section ...

Push up to move up a gear and pull down to move down a gear ... Remember to let go of the accelerator when doing it ...

As kelvin6 said, read your manual ...

hmm ive used it for two years and I have never let go of accelerator to shift. There's no neutral so when you let go of accelration it's really uncomfortable. Anyway I try to shift at 2500 rpm or so normally. I ahve a problem with shifting down but it's something along the lines of belowe 50 miles per hour gear 4 below 40 gear 3 below 30 in gear two. This is for a Audi a4 2.8 Q though.

^^^ Really? Hmm, never had a tiptronic so I really don't know ...

I was just guessing it's like a "easier manual" shift. xD

Its basically a automatic transmission that lets you select gears like a stick shift minus the clutch...
Also in your owner's manual, it should also outline each gear's safe speed... if you do hit the limit the car will override you and upshift or downshift as needed... its not that stupid to let you kill it.

2nd and 3rd gears can usually go pretty far... even in my 4 speed auto (not tiptronic), i've hit 67mph in 2nd...

its pretty much explained above.
but you dont have to let go of the accelerator while you shift gears.

shift up + to move up a gear and shift down - to lower the gear.
there should be 4 gears altogether. 1 2 3 and 4.

look at it on a manual car point of view and you'll figure it out.
for eg. dont go 80km/h on first or second gear or you'll f*ck your car up or when your going 100km/h shift to 4 etc.
but remember, theres a lag factor. you cant do it twice at one go. so you cant go from 1 to 3 in two shifts at one time.

sports/luxury cars will have triptronic as standard. which is great.

anyway. i hope you figure it out. its not that hard.
