So I recently graduated from High School and I'm currently deciding on going to an art school.

I'm currently taking a year off from school but I'm really interested in going to an art school.

So far the only 2 schools that interests me is the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena and the Savannah College of Art and Design.

Well I'm wondering does anyone go to any of these 2 schools and how is it there?

And if anyone else goes to any other art schools please inform me on how your school is.

Thanks sweatingbullets.gif

EDIT:
Also what do you guys think about $28,110 a year at Art Center and $24,390 at SCAD?
Too pricey?

Ok I only know about Art Center in Pasadena because I visited it on a art field trip there.

If you go there, you MUST be serious about your art. People are not there to goof off. Most students actually graduate from another college before attending here. Your portfolio counts for a lot, and they don't let just anyone in.

If you love doing automobile design, this is the place on the West Coast. Also you might research on what type of art you want to specialize in!

Art Center is worth the money, because it seems many graduates find job offerings out of college.

My best bet to you is take a personalized tour of these schools before attending them.

Good luck! biggrin.gif

What are you planning on majoring in?
SCAD is one of the best for Graphic Design, but other than that, they're just decent.
&& If you're going to SCAD make sure you go to the one in Savannah && not the one in Atlanta.

tofukiller - Yeah I know they are serious, lol. I've look through their application process and they want like 2 essays and like they questions you're suppose to answer are like crazy lol.

glow* -Really? I wanted to major in Illustration or Graphic Design, anyways =). Why Savannah? Just overall better or something?

The one in Atlanta is new.
They bought out the Art Institute of Atlanta.
The Savannah one has better teachers and I think they're quality of work is better.
I have 2 friends who go to SCAD Atlanta && one unnie who graduated from SCAD Savannah.
Savannah is better IMO.
But it sucks that it;s in Savannah - so far.

I don't know if this helps but I heard that
if you go to Art Center it's best if you know
exactly what type of career you want because
they start you on specific coursework early.
And also make sure you have an impressive portfolio~.
I don't know anything about the other college sorry ;;

Art Center is a pretty good school (knowing because I went to a magnet design/art high school). A pretty kick-ass personal studio too, I must say, haha. I heard from my teachers that Savannah is sorta iffy because there's a debate whether their school is an accredited college or not.. (Although I don't know it myself.)

And yes, for Art Center, you must know what path you want to go into, because they go straight to the point and teach you it. There really isn't time to decide what you want to do there if you want to go there... as far as what the college rep told us when they came down to my school. I know for a fact that Art Center's graduates do indeed become successful.

Also, art colleges in general are supposed to be expensive, since they ARE private. They can tend to run in the $20k-$40k (or even $50k, I heard). But don't let the annual tuition/room/board costs discourage you. If they really love your work, they'll give you scholarships.

Add me if you wish. :] Just mention that you're a Soompier!

I went to the Savannah college of Art and Design my freshman year and I thought it was cool. I ended up having to transfer back closer to home (Texas) for personal reasons. I learned a lot there and really improved my drawing skills. They also had a lot of clubs, like I was in the sequential art club and we had demo's from other artists to help improve our comics, characters, etc. Also it's a really diverse school and the students are from everywhere. I even met a guy from Japan there while I was working in the school library. The downside is it's a very expensive school, which is one of the reasons why I transferred back home. I believe it's also expensive because it's a private school.

art center came to my community college to talk about their school and i fell in love immediately. i really wanted to go there, but i couldnt afford living away from home and going to school at the same time--sucks. i think i may get my masters there though. i don't know anything about savannah, but i heard from my art teacher in c.c. that it was a very reputable (sp?) place to go. i also researched art center and saw there were some pretty famous people that graduated from there. as for the price thing--ill be going to cornish and im paying $24,000 a year plus other things like a new computer and software and all that crap. i think all art schools are gonna be expensive because the majority of them are private-- whichever school you decide to go to, im sure ull get a great education smile.gif

I'm interested in going to SCAD.
But i was wondering is there alot of asian people that attend Savannah as much as there is in Atlanta.
As much as i want the learning experience, I'm stuck between the two because i'm more of a city person and networking laugh.gif

my uncle is recently attending (he's a graduate) Art Center College of design, and he says that it's the top #1 art school in the nation. I hear MTV goes there to find some people to give jobs to...I might be off. My uncle does transportation design, and he just told me that he got hired by Nissan to design cars for them. I went to go visit Art Center last summer, and I personally loved the atmosphere and everything. But everyone there is serious and they are really committed to their work. I went late at night where students were pulling an all-nighters to finish their project, and it was crazy! I think half of the students who attends there are Asians, specifically Koreans. But I hear it's hard to get into this school, but if you impress them with your portfolio, and I mean it has to be really really good-looking and professional, then I bet you could get in. I think this school is worth it.

Whoa you think THAT'S pricey. Even if I get into colleges such as Parsons and Pratt, I have to consider if I want to attend there because it's so freaking expensive. But good luck finding the right art college! Sorry for this useless post because I don't know much about those two schools.

Art Center is amazing, and extremely competitive (it's one of the top art schools in the nation).
I would consider going there myself, but there are some turnoffs that you should be aware of.
The average student is about 25 years old, and most of them have previous years of college education. There is no campus housing, so people find apartments to live in. You have to declare your major when you apply.

Basically Art Center has an amazing curriculum (especially for illustration). But if you're looking to get a "good college experience" (outside of school work), or if you're unsure of what you want to do with your art/aren't extremely serious, then you should probably go somewhere else.

SCAD is a bit iffy. Everyone I've spoken to either hates it or loves it.
But I've heard so many negative stories, that it turned me off from applying.
To me the school has an air of shadiness that I'd rather not deal with.

If you're applying as an illustration major you should also check out
- Ringling
- Rhode Island School of Design
- School of Visual Arts
- Parsons
- Maryland Institute College of Art

yeah risd! biggrin.gif

(i'm a frosh at risd btw hehe)

anyway. not to sound cocky or anything, but risd is considered the best, or at least one of the few, art school in the nation. Every major here is very.. strong (for lack of abetter word) in its own way.

you guys know the show avatar the last airbender? well 2 graduates of illustration from RISD created that show smile.gif
however, the tuition is what makes most people not/can't come to risd.. $50,000 per year basically and risd hardly gives out any scholarships unless you're both an academic and artistic genius. sad.gif boo!
