i'm sure most of you guys are smart drivers & keep all equipment from flying around in your rides...but here's just a little reminder...

Loose speaker leaves driver paralyzed

02:26 PM PDT on Tuesday, July 31, 2007
SUSAN WYATT / KING5.com

The large speaker inside the Datsun flew forward in the crash and struck the driver in the neck.

SEATTLE - A 27-year-old Redmond man was left paralyzed after the car he was driving was rear-ended and a non-mounted speaker in his car flew forward and hit him, breaking his neck.

The Washington State Patrol says the man was driving a Datsun 240Z and was stopped at the ramp meter light on the NE 70th ramp to northbound I-405 on Saturday afternoon when a second man driving a Ford F250 pickup failed to stop for the meter light and ran into the Datsun at a high rate of speed.

The impact of the crash caused a speaker in the Datsun to fly forward, striking the driver and breaking his neck. He was left a quadriplegic and remains in serous condition at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.

The driver of the Ford, a 40-year-old Bothell man, was not injured. The truck he was driving is owned by Intrastate Painting Corporation in Seattle.

The collision remains under investigation.

The State Patrol is urging people to be cautious when mounting speakers or other devices in vehicles. They say appropriate brackets designed to withstand sudden stops or impacts should be used.

from the looks of the pic it seems as if that speaker was actually installed onto the car, but just poorly. So when the car got hit, the speaker broke loose and flew to the front.

Yes and no. This is a car related story, so if the original poster wants the audience to be car lovers then that is fine since it can go in either place.

Thanks Angela for your contributions. Keep on posting. wink.gif

Damn that sucks. Hope he gets well. This is one reason why I don't keep my plate up on the dash, although it looks so much cleaner. One accident and you have a piece of metal flying around the cabin.

The same thing would go with grocery shopping, be especially careful where you put those cans....

Other things that can be come a projectile in a crash would be cellphones, iPods, etc, anything that is unrestrained. I remember when I crashed my car, I found my all my stuff all over, the car mirror landed in the back seat, a portable CD Player from the back in my driver footwell, the MD player that was in my cup holder flown under the passenger seat... things fly when there is a accident, luckily nothing stuck me, nor was it a high speed crash...

If your car has storage bins or compartments, use them wisely.

It is something to think about. I see a lot of cars with loose speakers in the rear deck and other things. Although it isn't in the front, another thing I don't recommend is the license plate on the dash or visor. Better safe than sorry right?

Putting things on the airbag cover is also very dangerous... because i've seen some ppl put like a metal emblem or toys, etc on their airbag cover for the passenger and sometimes on the driver seat. For some of you who don't know, when a airbag deploys, it doesn't make the cover flip open, it rips it apart blowing through the plastic. If any item was on the airbag cover, that item is going to hit you with tremedous force and maybe injuring or killing you.

yeah, it could fly and stuck in your head, or maybe it's going to be that Final Destination, when the guy's head cut too half by a flying piece of metal. Wooosh!
