The title says it all. I'm looking for a good digital camera for less than $500. Preferably thin and handy.
At the moment, I have a Canon Powershot S50. Yeah old and bulky lol.
I'm not much of a video fan, just having the functin is fine, it doesn't have to be good. I want picture quality more.

Please recommend, and explain why it's actually better than others.

canon sd series or the fuji finepix f31fd (they have a f40, but it's not that much better than the f31, and it's cheaper too!) save the extra money and put that into a bag and memory card. =)

if you want anything better, prepare to go bulky. canon s3 IS is a GREAT camera... it's just big =P

^ I heard PowerShot SD1000 isn't great as expected. Like pictures are frequently blurry even with exceptional photography skills.

With Canon, you can't just think bigger number = better camera. Canon SD1000 is a good camera but it's made to be exceptionally small (at least compared to other Canon cameras). If you want quality, I'd say Canon SD850IS since the image stabilization helps a lot. Fujifilm F31FD is pretty much the best camera for taking pictures in low light but people don't like how they have their own brand of memory cards (it's xD or something like that).

So I'd say stick with Canon or get a Fujifilm F31FD.

I totally missed that model. I was scanning and the dsls's caught my eye and I got side tracked sleep.gif
I'll probably stick with Canon.

Thanks for the suggestions!

For low light and all around, Fujifilm FinePix F3xx series.
We all wear masks. Everyone, everyday... sometimes we wear them so much, we forget who we really are. And sometimes if we're lucky, someone comes along and shows us who we really want to be, who we should be.

Tumblrrr.

i vote a 2nd for the sd 800 IS. it's an older model, but it has IS, and also can shoot wider angles. 10mm in the 100mm+ focal length is nothing compared to the 9~10mm you get from the 28~38mm range. plus, it's cheaper and the money saved can go into memory and accessories =)

so why get the sd1000? because it uses better technology. it's faster (less shutter lag) and the burst mode is actually useable.

in terms of overall image quality, the sd 800 will win out by virtue of IS. with IS turned off, the sd1000 and sd800 will be very similar, but the sd1000 will run smoother and generaly be nicer.
