if u got a 5 on your ap calculus exam, you are exempt from taking the math placement test. smile.gif you will have free time when other people in your group are taking the test... so basically get familiar with the campus. Have fun!

I just got back from orientation on Tuesday (session 103!), and it was pretty fun! Not exactly worth the whopping $365 dollars but it was definitely worth the experience. College freedom is a whole other world, no one bosses you around and it's really up to you. Some of the presentations were kind of boring but the socializing is great. Everyone is active and really out there to meet new people. Have fun!!
Oh and if any of you guys are planning to get a sweater at orientation, don't get it until you guys sign up for this thing called ASUCLA. They give out 20% off BRUINWEAR coupons when you sign up for it, and that saves like 10 dollars off a $53 dollar sweater. There is also a coupon for a free drink! Unfortunately I bought a sweater before I got to getting that coupon. sad.gif

Actually if you really want to save money and buy your sweaters and hats from the ucla store, you should wait for the sales that they usually have. We have three sales in a school year. The first one is usually the week before or during halloween. The sales are usually 25% off. The second one is usually the week of valentine. I don't remember when is that last sale tho. But basically they have one every quarter. =) That's when I used to buy my gear. The whole store is on sale. It gets a bit crazy during the first sale because of freshmen. But if you can hold off until then, it would save you some money. Like when u go home during break, you can give them to your family or something. If you can't find your size since things do go fast, you can always buy it then, and return for a smaller size the next day or something. The sales starts at like 7:30 in the morning until closing which is usually 7 or 8 at nite. hahaha.. hope this helps some of you!!!

^Or you could goto that shop on Westwood and Leconte that has imitation(?) UCLA gear. Not sure if I would call it fake but it's so much cheaper. It's not the same from the store, but not sure many would notice. Lemme rephrase that, I dont think there's anyone that cares to spot the difference.

good luck to the ppl who havent gone yet. cause it was hard making a decent schedule with what they have left.

fyi: you can also get discount coupons (25-50% off on bruinwear, school supplies, free food, etc) when you go buy your textbooks during week 1 and 2 ;D

Where do I get these coupons? I got one for 20% at orientation.

In any case, orientation was pretty bad for me because I was towards the end so the classes open for my major were like . . . 6 out of something. Next quarter, I get to pick with the juniors. Woot.

They give it to you when you purchase books from the bookstore. It's kind of a rip since buying books from the bookstore = you pay a lot more. Just try to find someone who will give you their coupon for free smile.gif.

I'm planning to buy my books soon...Does anyone actually recommend buying the books from the UCLA Bookstore? Does it really matter that you get it from that specific store? I'm debating from just buy from Amazon where it's obviously cheaper but sometimes I hear some classes require you get a specific edition of a book...IDK...so any suggestions?

if you can buy the exact version online then get it online. it's too expensive to buy books at the store. special editions are the exceptions because you generally need that edition for your class.

facebook is also a good option. Just make sure you limit the search to UCLA students in order to find the books you want unless the prof decided to use a different book for that quarter. There's also a store in westwood that sells used books too. I never used it, but some of my friends have gone there and gotten books for cheaper prices.

My last three years at ucla, I bought all my books online through amazon. Saved a bundle.... usually I go to the uclastore online and just pick my classes that I have and then look at the edition number and title and order it through amazon. haha.. do not buy books from the uclastore.... especially if u are a south campus major of any sort, like I was.... science and math textbooks are very very expensive...

^ Mine totals to about $500--used and required. So expensive! D:

Since we have about 2 more weeks until school starts, do you think I'll get my books on time if I order online from Amazon or other sites? :X

Mine were like ... $250 something for two classes. My third class doesn't have its textbooks posted yet for some reason.

Thank God for financial aid.

You should be fine but it's not like you need the books for the first week of class. But if you are concerned about shipping to your house then to ucla, then yeah you may have to worry about that.

My last year at UCLA, I was doing the ghetto method, which consisted of using the books that the professors put on reserve and photographing them. Total spent last year - $36. Won't work for everyone, but if you REALLLLLLLLLLY want to save, it's an option. I had financial aid to cover the books, but I'd rather pocket that money :3.
