Trying to nurse home a slim lead against the New York Yankees these days is like trying to plug a leaky dam with chewing gum and masking tape.
You might hold the water back for a while, but eventually it's going to burst through.
So it went Monday afternoon, as the Toronto Blue Jays failed to sufficiently reinforce a 3-1 lead despite numerous chances and paid for it in the sixth when the Yankees exploded for four runs in the sixth inning of a hard-fought 5-4 victory.
The surging Bronx Bombers (62-50), who had scored 74 runs in their previous seven contests, improved to a major-league best 19-7 since the all-star break and continued their wild-card charge with a few timely hits when opportunity presented itself.
''In tight ball games against them the way they've been swinging, it's going to be tough,'' lamented Jays manager John Gibbons. ''Tack-on runs are big, especially when you're facing that lineup. It turned out to be the difference today.''
