Currently I'm taking 2 honors and the rest are regulars and i'm a high school sophmore.
I'm getting all A's except 1 honor class which i'm getting a C(74%) for the quarter. Weighed grade would be a 4.0 and unweigh would be 3.6 and i'm just wondering if it will look bad on the transcript. My dream UC is UC Berkeley, so if I don't do too well in one of my honors, i'm afraid that i cannot get into good UC's. My teacher says that my writings improved greatly and I should stay in the class and get C throughout the whole year because he said that if i want to go to UC's, i need to practice with my writing now. Since i'm a foreign, i have trouble with the language a bit, and World History Honors requires some great writing and reading skills. Any suggestion? Thanks!
Oh yeah and I'm in Golf team and in art club, and will join CSF next semester and also taking SAT classes/memorizing vocab words.

a tutor might help.

I can't really say.
I had a great world history teacher, so his class was easy to pass

Its one class - just move on and tell yourself you'll do better. Honors dont really matter much anyway its APs that count

how are just plain honors classes weighted? that's weird. do colleges actually honor that weight? 'cause i know some schools look at unweighted GPA without even APs and then factor APs into other stuff. you should be ok though as long as you understand the class and you're doing not so well because of language probs, etc. and it'll look better to stick with it and pull it up to maybe a B if your writing keeps improving than to drop it with a C and move to a regular class. a 3.6 isn't that bad plus it's only sophomore year. if you do better next year because you've improved then it won't be such a big deal.
Hey, look! Finally a different signature after all these years!

some honors classes are weighted supposedly... anyways all you have to do is keep on trucking, my brother got into berkeley with a total of 7 ap classes and straight a's except for a b in phys ed but they wont count that... a while back i was a slacker but now im in my junior year with 5 ap classes and at the 10 week i had 5 a's and a b... all you really need is devotion and something that drives you

extra curricular activities really help i think, but i dont have the time with my classes, really wanted to try out for volleyball and tennis, might next year

even though you have a c in that class its honors which is better than regulars.. so in the end if its down to you and someone who took the reg. class and made a 100 versus you who made a 74 they'd choose you since you took the harder class and maintained a passing grade.

comprehend? just try to raise your grade next time =] thats all you can do. and no it wont harm you severely dont you get extra points added into your gpa because you took h/gt or ap classes?

hmmm... do you live in california? because if you do, you still have a chance to get in. however, if you're out-of-state, then it'll be extremely hard to get in. either way, a C does not look good on your transcript even if it's an honors class.

well yeah but its better than failing. but it also means that your willing to
apply yourself. thats what my teachers have been preaching. if you
take harder classes but pass most likely they'll choose you over the
person who got a 100 in a reg. class because they havent applied or
gone to the extent of pursuing harder courses.

Getting C in Honors is not the same as getting a C in a regular class. I say if you tried your best and C was the best you can get, I say have no regrets. Because you challenged yourself to take a rigorous course biggrin.gif

Geez, I remember the ole days where people were going crazy about doing all these things just for college, laugh.gif . I chose not to do all of that, but I went to a crappy school instead (I guess that's the fallback).

Seems like you got things in line. Schools like it when you challenge yourself, but they like it even more if you improve yourself. Take more honors classes, and AP if you can handle it. The admission offices want smart people, but they already have smart students. I think it is in their best interest to grant admission to those who work hard, because in the end, they're the ones who are going to make a difference in this world.

Thank you all for the replies! I now have a pretty good start so far. For this class, we start grades all over after quarter ends and average out the grade for both quarters. Sometimes I have hard time understanding the main idea of what we're studying and when I take a test, I can't give good examples which what my teacher said is holding me back from higher grades. We've taken 3 tests so far and I never finish any of them on time, so he told me that I can write good but I need to write faster so I can add in more informations and that is how I could get higher grades. I looked at my friend's paper who is getting a high A and his test was only 1 page more than mine. But he was able to tell the reader what he's trying to say and give good examples and that's what I have hard time doing. Most of the time after reading my textbook, I would have no clue what is going but my friends do help me and explains it. My teacher doesn't lecture, this class is self-study. I don't seem to have any problem in any of my classes except this class, not even my English class!! Oh and at my school, honors and AP classes gets 1 extra point. A = 5, B = 4, C = 3.

So now what I'm thinking is, study really hard for SAT and do bunch of extra curricular to make up for any low grades. I just had a sub today who graduated from UC Berkeley. He said that my GPA is fine, and if I do good on SAT and some extra curricular and write really good for the application essay, I have a high chance of getting in. He also said that when it's time for the application essay, I should hire a profressional editor to read my paper and fix whatever is neccessary.

I think to those who say getting a C is not as bad as getting a C in honors - I think the opposite. Getting a C in honors means you're not up to the "challenge".

Its better to get a B or an A in regular than C in honors.

I definitely agree. If you're getting a C in honors, it means you're like average. Honors is meant for people who can get A's and B's. If it's a fluke this quarter, then okay. But if you're consistently getting C's, then I think you should re-consider. A C for a course grade doesn't look good on your transcript, regardless of the difficulty.

hm...I think getting a C in AP/IB is better than getting a C in a regular class. It shows that you try or atleast attempt to try and learn more.

Better a C in Honors than a D in Honors (Got that twice, I see my dreams of Berekley flying away).

I think that if you constantly improve like get a C, then next grading period, a B, then, an A then you have nothing to worry about.

I got a C in honors geometry. I gave up on UCB.

My tutor said, "any C is glaring in the eyes of admission officers."

How does your teacher know that you're going to get a C for the WHOLE YEAR? I would've gave my teacher a piece of my mind if he told me that.
it's only qt grades for now, and they don't count. Just keep on trying, I'm sure 74% can go to 76.. 78.. and then 80.. and then......A ? heh.

I'm now at 88% XD I'm starting to get the hang of what he wants to see on the essays. I hope i do good in this quarter so I can atleast get a B for the class. (Quarter 1 + Quarter 2 / 2) Since I got a C last quarter, it is not possible to get an A for the semester, but a B is good enough. Thanks everyone for the replies biggrin.gif
