I'm looking to buy a new digital camera and am having so much trouble deciding on which one to get.

My choices:

Canon Powershot SD (either 750, 850 or 1000)

OR

Canon PowerShot Pro Series S3 IS 6MP with 12x Image Stabilized Zoom

Anyone have any opinions about these? I want to buy a Canon EOS, but currently don't have enough money to get it. Would the Pro Series be a good compromise? I've had many different SDs, and i've loved them all. I really can't decide which one to get...

I suppose the main difference between the SD series and the S3 is the size. The S3 is pretty chunky (not as much as EOS but still). If you want image quality more than size then I suppose S3 would be better. I think it's always a good idea to try them out at an electronics store - hold them, take a few pictures and see how you like it.

the s3 would make for a nice transition into dslr's. plus i believe it's cheaper than the 850IS at the moment. if you dont mind the size, i'd go the s3.

the sd1000 and 750 are very similar models. the sd1000 is slimmer and has a viewfinder. the sd750 has a larger lcd (3.0"). all other aspects are very similar or the same. it's a tossup IMO

the 850IS would be the best IS compact in the SD line, but it also carries the most expensive price tag of the cameras you've mentioned.

if you're looking to go EOS, i'd suggest getting a used xt + kit lens. if i were to start over with a limited budget, that's what i'd do. u can probably scavenge around for a used xt for ~$400 US and the kit lens for another $50~60. about $100 diff between the 850IS. i think that's what i'm gonna do for my friend once she finally decides to commit to this wallet emptying hobby

i got that camera for my birthday in june and its great! i love it. its small, takes really good pictures, and its easy to use. but like what watcher said its expensive. i asked the salesman which camera was the newest and he said it was this one. its been 2 months now so maybe the price has dropped.

I have the 750. A couple ppl I know have the 1000. I prefer mine over the sd1000.

Honestly, there hasnt been a single time I've actually needed to use the view finder. And so the large lcd screen is very nice. When you compare the 1000 with the 750, the sd1000's lcd screen seems puny (even though it's fairly large). Also, the 750 is a bit sleeker looking, the sd1000 looks a bit outdated (looks like the older sd cameras, whereas the 750 looks more like the newer sd cameras).

The 750 is pretty durable, I dropped it from about two feet onto solid concrete countless times and even though it's scratched, it works perfectly fine.

If you have the money, go for the 800IS or 850IS.

please do not PM me asking me to close threads, etc! i am no longer a mod! ^^ thanks!

S3IS should be pretty good I think, I got the S2IS before the release of S3IS and I think it's great I've gotten some good pics. Still haven't taken the time to learn all the functions yet though lol.
I don't know much about Powershot SD though.

I have the Canon PowerShot Pro Series S3. Its pretty neat but kinda HUGE! I call it my stalker camera because the zoom is just amazing.

but if your looking for a small size camera, go for the SD.

because most people don’t understand me, my sadness grows and my heart tends to weep..

Just bought a 950IS (to replace an old 500) as a point and shoot backup for my DSLR. Also bought my wife a 850IS and my in-laws a 750 last week. These are my 7th or 8th sets of Canon cameras. No complaints with Canon ever. smile.gif

Of the ones you mentioned, I'd go with the 850IS.

^ Yeah... with all accessories and what not, I blew around 6-7k on cameras/camcorders the past 2-3 months. All Canon (except for a Sony HD Camcorder). I think I'm taking the "dad" + "keeping memories" thing a little overboard....haha. Still need to get a tripod then I'm done (for now).

puhahaha... for ur dslr or ur point and shoots?
if it's for your dslr, be a nice strong dad and go aluminum (manfrotto)
you can be the cool, hip dad by going carbon fiber (gitzo)
but wouldn't it be nice to invest the difference in ur kids college funds? =)
