Reading will certainly help, other things you could do is take practice SAT tests (because that's one of the things you want to do) and analyze the writing section. Analyze what you got wrong and how it works.

Reading and doing that will help you immensely.

Good luck ^.^

Get Barron's SAT2400 and you will know the grammar errors in the SAT. Then, practice the SAT using the blue book. My advice is to really know how to utilize your mind to be able to immediately recognize the grammar errors, b/c for me, I sometimes don't notice the grammar error until AFTER I finish the test, therefore realizing: "Man, I would have gotten it right."

Reading, as everyone said. If you're specifically interested in improving your SATs there's an actual list of books that people have complied to help you for SATs. I know Fahrenheit 451, To Kill a Mockingbird, Oliver Twist, 1984, Animal Farm, Tale of Two Cities are amongst them. And learn latin roots - but just memorizing vocabulary is not use - you have to actual use them to remember them properly.

read a lot of books... find ones you like... don't have to be 'classic' literature or anything... ^^

and keep a daily journal or something like that... =)

also, i remember in elementary school we had these things called daily oral language (DOL) where you correct the mistakes...
it seems to be ver easy, but it helps you remember grammar rules... i just did one recently as a 10th grader and i was surprised that there were some mistakes i missed... xD
you can find some examples of DOL with google...

definitely read more -- novels, magazines, newspaper articles.
you'll attain a larger knowledge on different writing skills, angles, and tones.
It'll eventually come naturally once you expose yourself to different types of writing.
You might even discover your own style of writing like this!

As everyone said, READ religiously. Although reading of any sort will help, it's best that you read classic literature. A large majority of modern literature is written with excessively simple language that won't really expand your vocabulary.

Also, another thing that really helped me LOADS in English was using the thesaurus as I wrote. I don't do it as regularly anymore but it definitely opened my eyes to TONS of new words when I tried to improve my writing. (:
