Four men met in a bar, and they soon found that all four of them had been to the Amazon Jungle. After a few more beers, they also realized that they had all been captured at least once, by fierce natives who ruled amazing fortresses. They soon got around to talking about their experiences, and their escapes. The first man said, "Well, I was once caught by natives who ruled a diamond palace. They caught me and took me to their king. He decreed that I was to die in one month. They threw me into a cell. Thank God that they didn't take my equipment. I had stolen a quartz file from one of the natives. I filed away the bars (it had curtains so they couldn't see) and escaped mere hours before I was to die."
The second man said, "I was also captured, but they took me to a simple copper structure. I did not have any such luxury of a month to escape, instead, a single day. Luckily they did not count on my desperation, and I was able to claw my way out of there using only my fingernails and pure adrenalin."
The third man said, "I was taken to the most amazing fortress of all. It was made out of black topaz. I was also the smartest of all of you," he bragged, "for I had brought with me a steel file. I was out in a jiff, and I was able to steal some of the topaz as well," he said as he showed everyone a piece of topaz hanging from a string around his neck.
The fourth man had been looking amused at the first and second men's stories, but as the third man finished he threw up his head and laughed. The other three men were looking slightly peeved, and asked him what he found so funny. He declared that they were all liars, and he could prove it.
How could he prove it, and when did each of the three men lie?
answer
The first man couldn't have filed away the bars, because if it actually was a diamond palace as he said, quartz wouldn't even leave a scratch.
The second man was closest of all, but still lying. Fingernails are very close to, but not as hard as, copper, so he couldn't get out, no matter how desperate he was.
The third man had lied most of all. First of all there is no such thing as natural black topaz (it was probably obsidian). Also he made the same mistake as all the others, for a steel file is not as hard as topaz, and would not do anything to the topaz.
In the Mohs scale of mineral hardness:
2.5- Fingernail
3- Copper
6.5- Steel File
7- Quartz
8- Topaz
10- Diamond
2)
Once upon a time there was a dad and 3 kids. When the kids were adults, the dad was old and Death came to take the dad. The first son, who became a lawyer, begged Death to let the dad live a few more years. Death agreed. When Death came back, the second son, who became a doctor begged Death to let his father live a few more days. Death agreed. When Death came back the third son, who became a priest begged Death to let the dad live till that candle wick burned out and he pointed to a candle. Death agreed. The third son knew Death wouldn't come back, and he didn't. Why not?
answer
The third son went over and blew out the candle after Death left because the son said "till the candle wick burns out", not "till the candle burns out".
3)
There once was a man named Mr. Braun. Not much was known about him, except for these things: he was married to a piano teacher, he was born and lived and married in Germany, and he had died a week earlier. Now, since he was dead and had no other living relatives, his estate would go to his wife (he left no will). The problem is, two women came forward, claiming to be the real Mrs. Braun.
Now, you're a detective, trying to figure out who is the real Mrs. Braun by having a piano competition. Mrs. Braun was an exceptional pianist, who could play many complex pieces. When you met them, they were sitting in a room with a couch and a piano. You extended your hand to greet them. One of them, a blonde, wore one ring (her wedding ring), which dug painfully into your hand when she shook it. The other (brunette) had one wedding ring also, but since it was on the other hand, you figured it was safe to shake..
Anyway, you put on the show with a lawyer as your witness. The blonde sat down and played Beethoven's Fifth with no trouble whatsoever, as did the brunette. They were both equal, but you manage to tell who the REAL Mrs. Braun was.
Who was it and how did you know?
answer
The blonde, since her wedding ring was on her right hand. In other countries including Germany, wedding rings are worn on the right hand, not the left.
4.)
Detective Palumbo had just finished examining the body of Debbie Layne, which was lying on couch in her plush living room.
"Mrs. Layne was hit on the back of her head 3 or 4 times with the butt of that pistol," the sleuth said.
The .45 lay on the floor near the body. Sheriff Hobbs was dusting the weapon for fingerprints.
"I've telephoned her husband at his office and only told him to come home. I dislike breaking bad news. Will you do it?" the sheriff said.
"I'll do it," said Palumbo as he watched the body being removed from the scene. Then he took a seat in a lounge chair to wait for Mr. Layne.
The ambulance drove away just as Mr. Layne arrived. He came into the living room and asked, "Where's Debbie? What's happened?"
"I'm sorry to have to tell you that she was murdered about 3 hours ago," said Palumbo. "Your cleaning lady found the body and called the sheriff."
"I can't find any fingerprints on this gun," said the sheriff. "I'll send it to the lab."
Mr. Layne's face flushed as he got angry and said, "Please find the fiend that clubbed Debbie to death. I'll put up a twenty-five thousand dollar reward!"
"Save your money," said Hobbs. "The murderer won't be that hard to find."
Why?
answer
Palumbo knew that the sheriff had only told Mr. Layne to come home, and not what had happened. When Mr. Layne saw the gun, he said that she had been clubbed to death. A normal reaction would have been to assume that she had been shot with a gun, not clubbed.
5.)
Detective Sing arrived at the scene of the robbery of a coastal house to find a man, Mr Jones, complaining that his jewels had been stolen. Detective Sing arranged to have him taken to the local police station to give a statement. After a quick search of the area, they found the thief not far away (he hadn't had time to escape), but he was refusing to give up the location of the jewels, and the name of his accomplice. Because the thief had been found quickly, Detective Sing ordered a search of the nearby area. The jewels were found buried beneath a beech tree.
Detective Sing arrived at the police station to talk to Mr Jones, who was complaining that he had been left alone in the interview room for hours. Detective Sing quickly explained that they had caught the thief, and discovered the jewels.
Mr Jones, agape, asked where they had found the jewels.
Detective Sing explained that they were found buried at the beech.
"But how did you know which tree they were buried under?" asked Mr Jones.
Detective Sing immediately arrested Mr Jones as the missing accomplice.
Why?
answer
Given that Mr Jones lived at a coastal property, it would be reasonable to assume that when Detective Sing tells him that the jewels were found buried 'at the beech', he meant "at the beach". The fact that he doesn't means that he probably has an idea of what has happened to them.
6.)
Bob Senior, had recently died. His will plainly expressed that his 5 million dollars worth of gold was to go to Bob Junior, but it seemed that Bob Senior (we'll call him Bob from now on and Bob Junior, Bobby) had hidden his gold and had given him a riddle within the will. Bobby pondered for a long while before figuring out where the gold was. Can you figure it out? Here is the will:
Great son, I have hidden the money.
Outstanding though you are, can you find my precious jewelry?
Let yourself explore your 120 arboresque friends to find the gold.
Do read on to save your time, son.
Uncovering 120 trees, though, takes forever and a day, so is it worth it?
No, so read on as you please & will.
Do not hire a professional detective.
Earn your right to the sybaritic gold.
Right side of arbor field it is.
Plot five plus six plus root of 7 or:
Instead take the 9th tree from left.
At noon the shadow will show you the difficult, unlikely solution.
Never forget the proverb: the pot will not boil by itself.
Outstanding you are, only by finding the gold do you, my son, have the right to claim it.
answer
The gold was hidden under the piano. The first letters of the sentences spell: GOLDUNDERPIANO. Put spaces in to get "Gold Under Piano"! The actual text in the will is only to confuse you.
7.)
Shaley was devastated. Last night her father died and left her $100,000. Her father left a note to where the money was, but she couldn't understand what it meant. She immediately called Detective Bowen.
When Detective Bowen arrived, he took the note from Shaley. It said:
Take 21 tissues off the desk.
You will see 14 pictures on the 4th floor.
Go 5 steps to your left.
Proceed down 18 stairs.
Take 20 paces towards the study.
You will see 8 stone eagles, 5 of which are flightless.
Tell them each 13 stories of 1 pirate.
After that, spin around 19 times.
Walk 20 steps outside to the 5th tree you see.
There will be 18 branches by the 2nd water fountain.
Finally, you should see 5 girls and 4 boys.
"I don't understand what he wrote in his letter, Detective", Shaley said, "it doesn't make any sense!"
"Don't worry", said Detective Bowen, "I know exactly where your money is."
How does Detective Bowen know where the money is?
Hint
Forget the text, think about the numbers
answer
In the note, the numbers represent letters of the alphabet. For example, 1=A. So the numbers in the note read, "Under the master bed".
8.)
In the city of Jackson Heights many things were going wrong. The city had the highest unemployment rate, the highest crime rate, and on top of that they were just going through a public transportation strike. On a serene, peaceful evening chaos broke loose. A very well-known, distinguished lady, Mademoiselle Pierre, had been murdered. Two men had been arrested. One was Jean-Philip Dumoulin. The other was Thomas Curdilack. Jean-Philip's story: "I was walking down the street to get a bite to eat when I heard a lady scream. I ran around the corner and I saw Mademoiselle Pierre lying on the ground. Standing over her was Thomas Curdilack. As soon as he saw me he turned and ran away. I then called the police." Thomas Curdilack's story: " I was taking the bus down to the Lakeshore Club to play poker with my buddies. As I got off, I heard a scream from around the corner. I ran around and saw Jean-Philip stabbing Mademoiselle Pierre. I chased him, but he got away. I then called the police." The chief detective told the police to arrest Thomas Curdilack. What made him so sure it was Thomas Curdilack?
answer
The chief was sure it was Thomas Curdilack because the city was going through a public transportation strike. Therefore, Thomas Curdilack couldn't have been taking the bus down to his club.
9.)
Carol Greenthumb had spent many years growing her prized and beloved Daphne odoras. They are beautiful flowered shrubs. These wonderful plants are perfect for the dry, hot area that Mrs. Greenthumb lives in, as they need little water, and they are her favorite plants.
Carol had to go on a month-long vacation and she had a dilemma. She needs someone to watch her garden to make sure that all the plants were taken care of. She decided to let her coworker, Maybelle Flower, watch the garden. Mrs. Greenthumb gave Maybelle very specific instructions on the care of the yard and told her to be very careful with the expensive Daphne odoras.
When Mrs. Greenthumb returned from her vacation, Maybelle was in the yard with the police detectives and the prized shrubs were missing. Maybelle was telling the detective that someone must have stolen the expensive plants because they had just been there the night before. Mrs. Greenthumb overheard her co-worker saying that she had taken care of the plants all month. Maybelle said that she had watered them every day and they were more beautiful then ever.
At that moment, Carol Greenthumb interrupted and told the detective to arrest Maybelle.
How did Mrs. Greenthumb know it was Maybelle that took the plants?
answer
Daphne odora is a type of plant that requires very little water. If it is watered too much, it will die. When Maybelle told the detectives that she had watered the plants every day and that they looked more beautiful than ever, Mrs.Greenthumb knew that Maybelle was lying.
10.)
There was a village controlled by the all powerful Chief. There was a theft in the village which had occurred recently, however no one knew who it was. The police had gathered up 8 suspects and brought them to the Chief. The Chief gave each of them a stick and said, "These are magic sticks. Overnight one stick will grow two inches longer than the rest. The one with the longer stick is the culprit. I want all of you to show up here again tomorrow." The next day, there was one person's stick that was two inches shorter while the other seven were two inches longer. The Chief had the person with the shorter stick arrested. How did he know that he was the culprit?
answer
The sticks weren't really magical. The Chief had said that because he knew that the real criminal would try to cut his stick shorter so it would remain the same length in the morning.
Okay done.
