What do you mainly use when you're in class?

I'm going to college soon, and we get this free laptop program... I've never used a laptop in class before so it's gonna be new for me. I really hate carrying something so heavy along with all my textbooks lol

Notebook for me~

I don't use the laptop because of:

1. I wont pay attention to the lecture.
2. I will be surfing around and be browsing through soompi a lot.

laptop can't write down stuff fast enough, sure it's good for text, but diagrams and such are much easier to do by writing, especially mathematical formulas. Does sleep count as a form of note taking?...

A4 note book, not a laptop because i won't be listening properly and just click away, and i can't type fast enough or i can' scribble small notes beside the main ones to expln a point etc.

All depends on your classes and how fast you type.

Back when I took the GE classes, a laptop would have worked well for a lot of those situations because its mostly text.

When I switched to engineering with the physics and calculus junk well... theres no logical way for someone to type it up. Even if you spent the time to diagram that stuff on a tablet it will still suck. The exception was one physics teacher who taught with power points. Then perhaps one could scribble or type on the slides to make them more interesting but typically I just printed little ones and wrote on the paper.

Now im a computer science major, everyone gets a computer in class. Half the time im just online other half I try to pay attention. When I do, I usually can't type fast enough to keep up with the teacher. I dont' know if the keyboards are really bad.. or more likely yucky. And well the times I actually go back to it to refer for notes the stuff I typed up made no sense whatsoever so it was a waste of time for me to try to type it. Actually in those classes the teachers rarely actually write anything its more along the lines of refer to power point, open up the program source code and change things along the way. In other words its pointless to take notes since your notes... is part of the modified program >_<

See it just depends. Follow what others do... then see what feels best. Most of the time im just online. Some of my best soompi tech replies were when I was ignoring the teacher.

notebook because I write faster than I can type. Plus I can organize it how I want and although I can do that on a laptop too it's a lot faster by hand.

Notebook. You can just retype it on your laptop if you want your notes more organized or if you have chicken scratch hand writing like mines. x_x (but i don't do that. LOL. I don't have laptop anyway)

I think a notebook is better and imo much comfortable. if you're going to use a laptop, probably you should more of a typer than a writer.

A paper and the back of my sketch pad. Or in minor classes, notebook and pen.

I only have 3 subjects that need note-taking[minors]...and one hates it when we take notes[he gives handouts], and the other two give monster lectures. -__-;;

The rest are drawing subjects.

But then...it'd be much different for you coz you're in a different country + college system.
I suggest you use a laptop if you can type faster than you write, or a regular pencil and paper if you can write prety fast.

Criticism does not equal bashing.

I type faster than I write (a LOT faster...) but for about the half of the courses I took first semester, it was either just too bothersome to use a laptop, or I didn't need one at all. For example: Linguistics. All the funny little-signs that represent the sounds in the English language (phonemes, I believe they're called) I had no idea how to type those up on the computer so they were a lot faster to do by hand. And for some classes, they already had notes that the students could download before actually going to the class, so note-taking in class was a bare-minimum---it was easier to add onto the notes on paper than it was to type it up and combine them later.

a laptop will give you speed but it will be a distraction. also, writing with a pencil/pen in my opinion helps cement the information better than merely typing. the reason being: typing is so fast you can afford to just type everything the professor says without really thinking about what is said. writing on the other hand is slow and writing everything down is almost always impossible. consequently, you have to interpret the info, siphon what's relevant, and then write--a better learning process in my opinion. for the reasons above i always used a pencil and notebook during my undergrad years.
i'd like to thank graceyoon and melkimx for warning me to 40%. thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Um, isn't notebook and binder the same thing? Unless I'm thinking of something different. O.o?

I tried to take notes with and w/o a laptop. It wasn't a good idea. I can type fast when it comes to diagrams or making a table/chart. It takes too much time. So, I just use paper and pencil. If professors give us the presentation beforehand, the better it is so I wouldn't have to create diagrams and such.

A notebook. I use the computer so much these days that if I don't write in class, I probably would forget how to write. Not kidding.
